EXT. THEATER - NIGHT

Jennifer is standing outside, alone. She is wearing a short, elegant black velvet dress, sexy yet tasteful, and a gray overcoat. People are filing into the theater past her, and she is anxiously looking at every face that files by. She also looks at her watch, and then at more people. We hear a voice over of the answering machine.

ANSWERING MACHINE

Hello. This is Alex McKinnon. Look, I hate talking to machines just as much as you do, but I'm busy right now and I can't pick up the phone, so please leave a message. Thanks... BEEP!

The voice of Jennifer can be heard leaving a message.

JENNIFER

Alex? This is Jennifer. I'm just calling to make sure our plans for tonight are still on. I have some errands to run, so let's just meet out in front of the theater. I'll be wearing that little black velvet dress you like so much. See you at 7:30 in front of the theater. Bye, hon.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

We see a telephone and an answering machine on a desk. Also on the desk are several stacked piles of paper, a model riverboat in a bottle, and a picture of a couple, ALEX and JENNIFER standing at the helm of a sailing ship. There is also a desk calendar open to November 2, 1991.

The telephone rings twice and the answering machine picks it up.

JENNIFER

BEEP. . . Alex? Where are you? The show is going to start any minute now. . .

All is quiet for a moment, then, off screen, a door latch is heard, and a body (ALEX ) comes into frame, humming. He sets a large box down on the desk, blocking the view of the recorder with it's message light blinking. The box is marked "Higgins Scientific Tools and Chemicals."

INT.WORKSHOP - NIGHT

We see a piece of machinery in the foreground and the telephone and recorder in the background. A painting of a dark, ghostly tall ship sailing in the moonlight hangs above the desk. Alex's hand fiddles with the machinery, and after a moment Alex's head comes up from behind it into frame. Alex is clean cut and has a G.Q. look about him. He is wearing headphones so he can't hear the message from Jennifer.

JENNIFER

. . . I'll leave your ticket at the Will Call booth. I hope you're alright, Alex. If you don't make it for the show, please call me. Bye, hon.

EXT. CAFE - NIGHT.

We see a table through the window of a cafe. Jennifer sits down alone, removing her coat and taking a menu from the waitress who pours her a cup of coffee. As she looks at her menu and sips her coffee, we hear a message left on an answering machine.

ALEX

BEEP. . .Jennifer, this is Alex. God, I am so sorry. I got caught up in work. Was the show good? I promise I'll make it up to you. Can I start with lunch tomorrow? Will you ever forgive me?

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

A framed newspaper clipping on Alex's wall reads "Local Scientist Awarded Grant To Develop Navigation Equipment." The clipping has a picture of Alex shaking hands with an Admiral and accepting a check. We hear a voice over of a message on an answering machine.

JENNIFER

BEEP. . .Of course I'll forgive you. We can discuss your penance at lunch. Pick me up at noon. I love you Alex. See you in a bit. Bye.

As the voice over continues we move through Alex's workshop. Various nautical items appear on walls and shelves. The items are both modern and antique (a model of the Red October next to a copy of Tom Clancy's novel, as well as original blueprints for a British Sailing ship built in 1883). A drafting board is covered with drawings and writings of pieces of mechanical devices, some of which sit on a worktable in the middle of the room. At one end of the workshop is a couch. Alex is lying on the couch, fast asleep. As the voice over ends we focus on Alex's face, asleep, and then on a clock. The time on the clock changes from 11:59 to 12:00 pm.

INT. CAFE - DAY

Jennifer and her friend MEGAN are eating lunch. A voice over is heard.

JENNIFER

I didn't hear from you, so I went to lunch with Megan...

EXT. SHIPYARD - DAY

Alex is sitting at the end of a pier, taking measurements with something that looks like electronic binoculars and a stopwatch. Some fishermen stare at him, shaking their heads as he makes notes. One waves and Alex waves back. Another recorder message is heard in voice over throughout this sequence.

JENNIFER

Beep. . . If I didn't know better I'd think you were trying to tell me something. I hope things are going well. Call me tonight and we'll make plans to do something.

INT. ALEX'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Alex is sitting in his chair reading a scientific journal and making extensive notes on it. He has a pencil in his mouth which he frequently takes out to make notes. He looks at his watch, a gold antique on a brown leather wristband. He notices that the second hand has stopped moving at 9:14, and he taps the crystal. When it starts moving again, he looks up at the clock on the wall, which says 9:16. Alex adjusts the watch again as we hear Jennifer's message:

JENNIFER

BEEP. . . Alex, Hi. I thought I'd call again. I'm free tonight...

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

The worktable has even more parts on it in orderly piles. On one end is a personal computer into which Alex is typing data.

JENNIFER

Just wanted to call and thank you for last night. I really had a great time. Sorry I was such an ogre when you arrived, but for a minute I didn't think you were going to make it. I really think you work too hard, Alex. . . Let's go see a movie tonight.

INT. WORKSHOP - DAY

Alex is testing a large electronic device which looks like a silver ball (about the size of a softball) with wires sticking out of the top of it. It is suspended in a plexiglass cylinder. The silver ball glows slightly as he turns on the power. Alex takes notes from the computer screen hooked up to the ball.

JENNIFER (in tears)

BEEP. . .Alex, where are you? Have you forgotten about me? It's my birthday, Alex.

EXT.FISHING BOAT - DAY

Alex is sitting on the back of a fishing boat trailing a sensor in the water with a long cord. He is taking notes from a small laptop computer. A seagull hovers behind the boat.

JENNIFER

Beep. . .Thank you for the flowers, Alex. They are gorgeous. Could we have dinner tonight?

INT. WORKSHOP - NIGHT

The workbench is now entirely filled with bits and pieces of machinery. Alex is working on fitting two large pieces together.

JENNIFER

. . . well, we're on for tonight, Alex. Dinner and a movie. Could you try to get there early? I really don't want to miss the beginning...

EXT. PARK - DAY

Alex is sitting in a park where a brass band is playing. He is nodding his head and tapping his foot to the music, and he is making notes from a small instrument he has which is connected to a microphone.

JENNIFER

. . . Look, Alex, I know how busy you are, but we've had these plans for over three weeks.

INT. HIGGINS SCIENTIFIC TOOLS - DAY

Alex is standing at the order desk while a clerk places several strange parts and tools into a large box. the clerk is reading from a list in her hand. She is dressed in a white lab coat. Alex pays with his credit card. It is rejected and he has to use another one.

JENNIFER

I can't believe you forgot last night. I'm not quite sure what to do with you when you're like this. . . . Anyway, I wanted to remind you how important tomorrow night is. I've been working for a long time on the Jenson account and I want to make a good impression.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex has assembled nearly all of the parts which are spaced evenly around a central platform. On the platform sits a chair and a small table where the computer sits. There is plenty of room on the platform. It is big enough to hold all of the machinery, though most of the machinery is spaced around it for easy access.

Alex is the messiest we've seen him. He picks up a canister labeled "Coolant Oil 3" and connects it to a valve mechanism labeled "Coolant Pump." He turns the valve allowing the contents of the canister to fill the pump. He watches the process on a small indicator. When the pressure indicator shows "High," Alex closes the valve and disconnects the canister.

Alex picks up a small tape recorder and begins speaking into it.

ALEX

Notes, 4:50pm, November 22. . .I have just connected coolant oil 3 to the coolant pump. This formula should take care of the problems I had with coolant oil 2's viscosity under extreme temperatures.

Alex clicks off the recorder. He crosses his fingers, and powers up the pump, turning a second valve. The pressure indicator drops to green reading "Normal." The pump emits a deep groaning, loud but not unpleasant. Alex then walks over to the large Plexiglas cylinder with the large metallic ball inside. The cylinder is labeled "Main Unit." As Alex looks inside, the cylinder begins filling with the coolant oil, which swirls around the metallic ball.

Alex moves to a keyboard connected to a computer monitor. On the monitor is a graphic image of the main unit. He moves the cursor on the monitor to a section reading "Main Unit - Power Up."

ALEX

Well, here we go. If you pass this test, we go on to the big time. . .

He presses the return button, and a loud hum starts coming from the Main Unit. The metal ball in the Main Unit begins to glow, first a deep then brighter red. He gets up and moves to the Main Unit. He clicks on his recorder and talks into it as he looks at several gages.

ALEX

The Main Unit heated up as usual, pressure and temperature are within the normal range.

Alex sets down the recorder after turning it off and picks up a small canister labeled "liquid hydrogen." He takes it to the main unit, pours the hydrogen over the upper half of the metallic ball, just below the wires. The glowing of the ball drops, and the coolant oil into the Plexiglas cylinder begins to become cloudy.

Alex glances over at the pressure and temperature indicators, and smiles as both continue to read normal.

ALEX

That's the way. Keep on going just like that.

As Alex continues to pour the liquid hydrogen over the Main Unit, the telephone rings, startling him and he almost drops the canister he is holding. Alex looks on as the phone rings, as he is unable to put the canister down to answer.

After three rings, the answering machine answers.

ALEX'S VOICE

Hello. This is Alex McKinnon. Look, I hate talking to machines just as much as you do, but I'm busy right now and I can't pick up the phone, so please leave a message. Thanks... BEEP!

Jennifer is heard through the speaker on the answering machine. As Alex hears who it is, he tries to rig up something to hold the canister in position so he can answer the phone without interrupting the test.

JENNIFER

Alex? This is Jennifer. Pick up the phone. I know you're there. . .

Alex drops the canister on his thumb, narrowly avoiding spilling the liquid hydrogen.

ALEX

Ouch!! Dammit!!

JENNIFER

All right then, Alex, don't answer. Tonight is the dinner party, you need to pick me up by 6:30. . .

ALEX

(looking at the clock which reads 5:05pm)

Oh, Shit! The party . . .

Alex tries stuffing anything he can reach under the edge of the canister to hold it in place, knocking things over as he does so.

JENNIFER

. .Are you going to answer the phone, or not?. . .Fine, but you better be here, Alex. . .

Alex finally gets the canister to stay in place, but he reaches the phone just as Jennifer hangs up.

ALEX

Hello? Jennifer? Are you there?

Alex hears the dial tone begin.

ALEX

Shit!

Alex puts the phone down, frowning.

He is startled by a loud beeping coming from the machine. He looks and sees that the pressure gauge has risen dramatically and is continuing to rise.

ALEX

Oh, No!

The oil in the cylinder has become completely white and the metallic ball inside can barely be seen.

Alex rushes to the keyboard and presses the "Emergency Off" button. Before it engages, a hose bursts and sprays Alex in the face with the congealed oil. He hits the off button again, trying to cover the break in the hose with his hand.

The sound of the pump and machine slowly fade down and stop. Alex takes a sigh of relief and looks at the clock. The clock reads 5:10.

ALEX

I can just make it. (he grabs the note recorder and begins to speak into it). Well, Coolant Oil 3 didn't work. It held up to the lower temperatures for a while, but eventually froze up. I will continue working tomorrow. End Note.

Alex quickly connects a canister labeled "Solvent" to the pump, and opens that valve, and another valve placed above a bucket. He then puts tape around the hose and starts running the pump again. As the pump begins running, congealed oil spurts into the bucket. Alex rushes upstairs.

INT. ALEX'S BATHROOM - EVENING

Alex gets ready in a quick succession of images, showing him showering, shaving with an electric razor, and putting on his pants.

As he finishes tying his tie, he opens the medicine cabinet to grab a comb and some styling mousse. Everything in the cabinet is in perfect order. He closes the cabinet and sprays the mousse into his hand and reaches up to put it into his hair, but he pauses, looking at the foam, rubbing it between his fingers. He smiles.

ALEX

That's it! Why didn't I think of it before?

Alex rushes downstairs, chuckling.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - EVENING

Alex rushes in and picks up the recorder and begins speaking into it, still rubbing the foam between his fingers.

ALEX

I think I have the answer to the coolant problem! If I used a liquid foam instead of oil, the air in the foam would insulate much better, and would keep the coolant from congealing. I think I can mix up a batch for testing in less than an hour. With luck the unit will be ready tonight. End Note.

Alex pulls a couple of canisters from the back of a shelf and takes them to a work table to begin mixing them.

INT. JENNIFER'S LIVING ROOM - EVENING

Jennifer is dressed for a night out on the town. She is tapping her fingers on the table as she picks up a copy of the National Geographic magazine. She opens it, but puts it down and gets up and walks to the kitchen.

INT. JENNIFER'S KITCHEN - EVENING

Jennifer gets a glass of water from a water bottle in the fridge, and begins to drink it. She puts it down and rushes to the window as she hears a car pull up outside.

EXT. JENNIFER'S FRONT YARD - EVENING

POINT OF VIEW SHOT FROM JENNIFER'S KITCHEN WINDOW.

The car Jennifer heard pulls into the driveway next door. A woman gets out of the car and, seeing Jennifer, waves.

EXT. JENNIFER'S KITCHEN WINDOW - EVENING

LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDOW AT JENNIFER

Jennifer frowns, but waves back and turns away from the window, walking back to the living room.

INT. JENNIFER'S LIVING ROOM - EVENING

Jennifer sits down in an armchair and frowns at the grandfather clock. It reads 6:40 PM.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - EVENING

Alex's clock also reads 6:40. Alex has set up the test with the foam just as he did with the oil. The liquid hydrogen canister is sitting in a makeshift wire frame over the main unit, and Alex is checking indicators and gauges on the computer monitor. He clicks on his recorder to make a note.

ALEX

Temperature and pressure are still going nicely. The new hose is holding up. Looks good...

Alex pats the Main Unit with affection and then removes the liquid hydrogen canister. The metallic ball begins to glow again a deep red.

EXT. JENNIFER'S FRONT YARD - EVENING

Jennifer storms out the door, slams and locks it, and rushes to her car, a small economical but sporty convertible. She gets in, slams the car door, peels out, stalls, peels out again, and speeds around a corner, out of sight.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - EVENING

Alex's clock reads 7:10. He has taken off his tie and rolled up his sleeves. He hits the power off switch on the keyboard, and the noise from the Main Unit slowly quiets. Alex grabs the recorder, smiling, and begins to speak into it.

ALEX

The foam works almost perfectly. Under higher pressure and quicker changes between hot and cold, the foam does begin to break down, but under higher stresses than I expect it to have to undergo.

EXT. ALEX'S FRONT YARD - EVENING

Jennifer's car speeds up to the curb, breaks squealing as it stops. Jennifer gets out of the car, slamming the door. She stomps up to the front door, pounds on it, and then rings the doorbell, twice.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - EVENING

Alex hears the knock and finishes off his recorded note.

ALEX

I will start with the final tests immediately. End Note.

Alex sets the recorder next to the digital clock, noticing the time which now reads 7:14.

ALEX

Shit! Jennifer!

Alex rushes up the stairs to the front door.

EXT. ALEX'S FRONT DOOR - EVENING

ALEX

Jennifer, I'm so sorry, but I've got great news! You're just in time! My experiments. . .

JENNIFER

I don't want to hear it Alex! (She pushes her way inside)

INT. ALEX'S FOYER - EVENING

JENNIFER

I'm tired of being stood up. You forgot my Birthday, my housewarming party, you even stood me up for your own surprise party. Do you realize it is already past 7:00 and you aren't even dressed?

ALEX

But, Jennifer, you don't understand...

JENNIFER

I don't care. Don't you understand Alex? I love you, and I can't sit around and watch you be obsessed with your work all the time. It seems like you just don't care bout anything but work, including me.

ALEX

I'm sorry, but...

JENNIFER

I'm sorry We haven't really had a conversation for over three weeks! I can't take this, Alex. I really need some predictability in my life, someone I can count on.

Alex looks back toward the stairs to the workshop, and then back at Jennifer.

ALEX

I didn't realize...

JENNIFER

I know you didn't realize. I don't like being this way, Alex. I thought that this thing would blow over, but I can see that it won't. I'm sorry, Alex, but I'm afraid that I've got to break it off. I love you, but I need someone I can rely on, and I can't stand not knowing if you'll be there when I need you.

ALEX

Jennifer, wait. Don't do this. I'll stop working so much...

JENNIFER

I can't let you do that, Alex. Your work means too much to you. I couldn't be responsible for your giving it up. I can't take the chance that you'll regret it. No, Alex. I'm afraid it's just over.

ALEX

But, Jen. . .

JENNIFER

(Tears freely flowing) Alex, please don't make this any harder. Just take care of yourself. I would have only held you back anyway. I love you, Alex.

She steps up to him, kisses him, turns and walks out the door. Alex stands there stunned, but comes to as he hears her car door slam.

EXT. ALEX'S FRONT YARD - EVENING

Alex walks out, calling to Jennifer, but she has already started the car and cannot hear him.

ALEX

Jennifer? Wait, Jennifer! Don't go! I'll do anything !(Jennifer drives off, Alex yells after her) I promise, I'll stop. . .Please, don't go. . .

Alex stands in his driveway as she turns around a corner.

EXT. PARK - AFTERNOON

Alex sits on a park bench, staring at ducks swimming in a nearby pond. Alex is alone. He slowly gets up and stumbles away.

INT. BAR - EVENING

Alex sits alone at the end of the bar, staring at the bottom of an empty glass before motioning to the bartender for a refill. Although it is still early, it is obvious that this is not Alex's first drink of the evening. The bar is fairly empty, just beginning to fill with the Friday Evening after work crowd.

Alex quickly finishes off the drink the bartender has just refilled, pays for it, and leaves the bar.

EXT. STREET IN FRONT OF BAR - EVENING

Alex walks out the door, stands at the corner and hails a cab. He gets in.

ALEX

The yacht harbor, please.

CABBIE

Sure.

They drive off.

EXT. HARBOR - EVENING

Alex gets out of the cab and walks down to his boat and climbs on board.

INT. SAILBOAT - EVENING

As Alex walks around the boat, a 30 foot sailboat with a comfortable cabin, his mind flashes images of the day he spent with Jennifer, the two of them sailing. We see the following images:

1. Alex teaching Jennifer how to sail.

2. Jennifer catching a fish excitedly.

3. Jennifer in slow motion leaning over the side of the boat and dipping her hair in the water.

4. Alex setting up the camera to automatically take his and Jennifer's picture.

We come back to Alex looking at this picture above the bunk in the cabin. It is the same picture we saw earlier on Alex's desk.

Alex turns around and out of the cabin.

EXT. BOAT - NIGHT

We are back on the sailboat with Alex alone.

Alex scowls and begins undoing the sails. He sets the sails, unhooks the lines from the berth, sails out of the harbor.

Large black clouds loom ahead of the boat. Alex ignores them and continuing out. The waves become larger and larger as he sails on. Lighting flashes and a few moments later, thunder rolls. A light rain begins.

Alex continues on in spite of the coming storm. The rain falls harder and the waves begin tossing the boat.

Alex begins having difficulty sailing. His sneer fades into a frown as he struggles with the wheel.

The wind catches hold of the sails and begins pushing the boat over. Alex begins sliding overboard. He grabs hold of the side of the boat, which is sitting at an angle, just short of capsizing. Alex climbs back to the wheel and turns it, righting the boat.

Alex carefully turns the boat around and sails back to the harbor, riding the edge of the storm.

Alex is soaking wet. He berths the boat, sighs, scratches his head, and exits the boat. He begins walking slowly home, head hung low.

INT. ALEX'S LIVING ROOM - LATE NIGHT

Alex sits in front of the television. He has a cup of coffee in his hand. His hair is still wet, but he is wearing dry clothes. He has a towel around his shoulders. He holds a remote control, flipping continuously from channel to channel. Various late night shows appear and disappear in rapid succession: Late Night with David Letterman, CNN News, and several classic films. The channel finally settles on Casablanca, just as the Germans march into France. Alex watches as Richard Blaine throws away the wet letter and steps onto the train leaving Paris.

Just as the train pulls away from the station on the television, the doorbell rings. Alex gets up and goes to the door. He opens it to reveal Jennifer.

ALEX

Jennifer, what are you doing. . .

JENNIFER

(putting her hand to Alex's lips) Please, Alex, don't say anything. I came here to say something, and I'm afraid that I am going to loose my nerve before I get it out, so please.

ALEX

All right. . .

JENNIFER

Alex, I've been such a fool. I am so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you. If you didn't ever want to speak to me again, I would understand.

ALEX

Never want to speak to you again? Don't be silly! Get in here, you! (Alex pulls Jennifer inside embracing and kissing her).

JENNIFER

You mean that you forgive me Alex?

ALEX

Forgive you? It is you who should be forgiving me! I can't believe that I'd treat you like that.

JENNIFER

All right, then (Jennifer grabs him by the shirt collar and kisses him fiercely, teasing him) consider yourself forgiven!

ALEX

Oh, Jen, I'm so happy you came back.

JENNIFER

Me too, Alex. Me too. (they kiss again).

ALEX

I don't know what life would have been like if I couldn't be with you.

JENNIFER

Don't worry, Alex. We have all the time in the world.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP

Suddenly a police car siren is heard, and we see Alex start awake in the chair in front of the television. The TV is blasting static and white noise. As Alex first awakens, his face is happy. His smile quickly shatters. Alex slowly gets up, sets the drink on the end table, and walks out the door.

INT. ALEX'S BEDROOM - NOON

The digital clock on Alex's night stand reads noon. Alex lies face down in his bed, the sheets twisted around him from fitful sleep.

Slowly Alex opens his tired red eyes. He grabs the mattress in his hands and presses himself up into a sitting position, groaning. He glances at the clock, and rubs his eyes with the palms of his hands. He focuses, sniffs, sighs and slowly gets out of bed.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

The calendar reads November 23. Alex walks down the stairs into his workshop, still dressed only in Calvin Klein briefs. He has a coffee cup in his hand. He sips the coffee and looks around the room.

Alex stares at the machine and slowly puts down the coffee cup. As Alex looks around the room he becomes angrier and angrier.

ALEX

Why didn't I see how obsessed I was. . . I mean. . . it's not like she didn't try to tell me. . . All this useless work and for what?

Alex rips the wires out of the main unit, but stops short of tearing the entire thing apart. He walks over to the drafting table and begins thumbing through the stack of drawings. A copy of the complete works of H.G. Wells sits on a shelf above the table.

Alex's scowl deepens as he looks at each of the drawings. He picks up one of the drawings and tears it in half. He continues to pick up the drawings and rip them.

Alex pucks up the last set of drawings and tries to shred it, but it is too thick. He throws the drawing across the room. It lands face up, and he looks at it from where he stands. His frown becomes a smile and he begins to laugh.

ALEX

All the time in the world... It was right in front of my nose all the time. How stupid could I be? It'll take me a bit of time to prepare everything, but what have I got to lose? Got to go to work...

Alex begins spreading out the drawings on the drafting table and begins working.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

The calendar says November 30. Alex's face is unshaven, his hair uncombed, and he remains dressed only in a tee-shirt and shorts.

The machinery, which previously was spread out in pieces around the workshop, is now compactly combined into one unit on a small platform. The platform is about 3 feet by 5 feet, with a chair and computer console in front, and the main unit with its cylinder casing resting behind. There i a short ramp from the platform to a large empty space in the center of the room. Alex is putting the finishing touches on the connections to the on-board generator, which rests just behind the main unit.

ALEX

That ought to do it.

Alex steps back and looks at his work. The machine is a complex bundle of wires, exposed computer boards and mechanical equipment, pipes, tubes, canisters, and a very primitive metal structure (looking somewhat like what Rube Goldberg might do with a deluxe erector set). It is a fairly compact little machine, however, and has a somewhat streamlined, if primitive, look to it.

Alex sighs with satisfaction, and picks up his coffee cup, taking a sip without looking. As he sips, he wrinkles his nose in disgust. He sets it down.

He moves the machine down the ramp to the empty space. He goes to the generator and turns it on, and then goes to the chair. He starts flipping switches and turning valves, and then he turns on the computer monitor. The monitor shows the diagram of the machine as before, showing all status gauges as green.

Alex moves the cursor to "set co-ordinates," hits return, dates appear on the screen. At first, both show the present date and time, November 30, 1:41AM.

ALEX

Let's see. How far should I go? A short leap would probably be better than a long jump. Hmm... this should be enough...

Alex inserts the date, "November 1." He leaves the time and year the same. Alex then inserts a disk, moves the cursor to the item marked "GO" in bold green letters. He hesitates over the button.

ALEX

Enough time. . . Hm. . . "We've got all the time in the world. . ."

Alex pushes the button. The main unit begins to glow and hum, then entire machine begins to glow and vibrate. Alex shuts his eyes, and the machine dissolves into nothingness.

INT. WORKSHOP - NIGHT

The time machine reappears on the middle of the room. water vapor floats up from the main unit and the crackle of static electricity is heard.

Note: From this point out there are two Alex's. ALEX 2 will be the Alex which we have followed from the beginning. Because ALEX 2 is traveling in the past, he encounters his past self, hereafter known as ALEX 1

INT. ALEX'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

The noise from downstairs startles ALEX 1. As he sits up in bed he bumps his head against the bedpost.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Back downstairs ALEX 2 gets up out of the machine and looks around the room. It is much cleaner and less cluttered , but the drawing board is filled with the sketches that. Alex 2 thumbs through them and laughs a little. He begins walking around, checking out the machine. He picks up the tape recorder from the desk.

ALEX 2

I can't believe it. It seems to have worked. No problems I can see, but I'll have to run some tests. . .

INT. ALEX'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

Upstairs, Alex 1 is hurriedly getting dressed. As he is putting on his pants, mumbling about burglars, he gets his leg caught in the pant leg and he falls to the floor with a loud thud.

INT. WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex 2 hears the noise and pauses in the recording. He walks out of the workshop to the foot of the stairs.

INT. STAIRWAY - NIGHT

Alex 2 looks up the stairs as Alex 1 moves through the bedroom door, fumbling with a Baseball Bat, stalking clumsily.

Alex 2 quickly, quietly rushes back into the workshop. Alex 2 takes the disk from the computer and pressed the "Go" button, sending the machine forward.

INT. STAIRWAY - NIGHT

Alex 1 is creeping down the stairs with the baseball bat. At the noise from the machine leaving, Alex 1 reaches the bottom of the stairs and, startled, swings around in the direction of the workshop. The bat accidentally knocks into a table at the bottom of the stairs and a plastic bowl on the table falls to the floor with a loud crash. Alex 1 jumps and, in readying the bat for a swing, hits himself in the knee, sending sharp pain through his leg.

ALEX 1

Who's in there? Come on, I heard you down here, who's there? If you are here to steal something, I should warn you that I don't have anything valuable, and even if I did, you wouldn't know what to do with it anyway, so why don't you just go home before I call the police. . . did you hear me? . . .

INT. WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex 1 opens the workshop door slowly, bat ready, and walks in carefully. While he is looking around the workshop (checking to make sure all of his equipment is safe, trying to find the source of the water vapor, etc.), Alex 2 slips behind him through the door.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Alex 2 goes to the bedroom and grabs some clothes out of the closet. He also grabs a credit card out of the wallet on the dresser. He then sneaks downstairs again, clothes in hand.

INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT

Alex 2 rushes into the kitchen-. He moves into one corner, hiding behind the fridge, and begins changing clothes. He takes off the T-Shirt and shorts and puts on the denim shirt, brown pants, and old tennis shoes he took from Alex 1's closet. These clothes are very different than the more stylish clothes we are used to seeing him in.

INT. WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex 1 goes back out the door, shutting off the light as he leaves. As he shuts the door, we focus on the recorder eft on the desk.

INT. FOYER - NIGHT

Alex 2 very quietly opens the front door and slips outside, glancing back over his shoulder. He locks the door again and closes it quietly.

INT. HOTEL LOBBY - NIGHT

Alex 2 registers at the front desk of the hotel with his credit card.

INT. HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT

Alex 2 enters the hotel room and moves directly to the bed and goes to sleep.

EXT. HOTEL - MORNING

Alex 2 walks out of the front door of the hotel and hails a cab. He gets in and rides away.

EXT. JENNIFER'S HOUSE - MORNING

Alex 2 is standing outside of a small house. He is holding something behind his back. A few moments later, Jennifer appears in the doorway. A surprised look comes over her face when she sees Alex 2 standing there.

JENNIFER

Well, what do we have here? I don't think I've seen you up before 9:00 in six months. What's the occasion.

Alex 2 looks at her and smiles.

ALEX 2

Oh, nothing special. I just thought I would see if I could find a beautiful woman who'd be willing to have lunch this afternoon.

JENNIFER

Lunch? This must be some occasion! Now let me see... one in particular, a young, attractive woman named Jennifer Murphy, who just happens to be free!

ALEX 2

Good! Why don't you give these to her, (he takes a bouquet of roses from behind his back and hands them to her) and tell her to meet me at 12:30?

Alex 2 kisses her, smiles, and then walks to the cab and gets in.

JENNIFER

(Yelling after him) Wait a minute! Where does she meet you?

ALEX 2

(Yelling back) Ask the roses!

Jennifer looks in the flowers and finds the spare key to Alex's hotel room.

JENNIFER

(To herself) Well, well!

She looks back in the direction Alex 2 and smiles.

INT. BEDROOM - DAY

Back at Alex's apartment, Alex 1 gets out of bed (after sleeping with the baseball bat) and goes downstairs in his underwear.

INT. WORKSHOP - DAY

Alex 1 starts making some coffee, and then he goes over to his drafting board and begins working. He picks up his recorder to make some notes. It is the same tape recorder Alex 2 used when he arrived.

INT. HOTEL - DAY

Alex 2 is sitting in a chair reading the newspaper. After a few moments, he puts the paper down.

ALEX 2

This is dumb! I already read this!

After a few moments, a key is heard in the door, and Jennifer walks in. Alex 2 gets up quickly and goes to her, kissing her and pulling her to him.

ALEX 2

God, it's good to see you!

JENNIFER

Honestly, Alex. I didn't know you had it in you!

ALEX 2

Well, there's a lot you don't know about me, Jennifer. Besides, I had to have my apartment painted, and I couldn't let this hotel room go to waste.

JENNIFER

No, I guess you couldn't. So where's lunch, I'm starved!

ALEX 2

Just one moment, Mademoiselle! First, Champagne!

He pops the top off a champagne bottle and pours two glasses, handing one to Jennifer. They sit together on the couch.

ALEX 2

To the most wonderful woman in the world, and to the rest of our lives, may they be spent in shared beauty and happiness.

Jennifer blushes a little. They drink the champagne, and then they stare ate each other. As one, their heads move together to kiss.

INT. HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT

The afternoon has slipped into evening, and Alex 2 and Jennifer are in bed, holding each other in sleep. Jennifer stirs, and rolls over. She awakens, smiling, and notices the time. The smile becomes a frown and she leans over and gently wakes Alex 2.

JENNIFER

Alex . . . Alex? . . . Come on, wake up, Hon.

ALEX 2

Hmm?

Alex 2 slowly opens his eyes.

JENNIFER

You awake now, Alex? (she kisses his cheek).

ALEX 2

Uhm Hmm. Yeah, what's wrong?

JENNIFER

I'm sorry I woke you, but I have to go. I told Megan that I should meet her at seven o'clock, and it's already six thirty. Just go back to sleep and I'll call you tomorrow.

ALEX 2

(Still groggy) Uhm, yeah, all right. Have fun with Megan. Tell her hello for me.

They kiss, gently at first, then more passionately until Jennifer breaks off, smiling. Her glance lingers as she gets up from the bed and begins to dress.

JENNIFER

Sleep tight, Alex.

ALEX 2

Hmm. . .

Alex 2 smiles sleepily and slumps back over in bed.

INT. JENNIFER'S HOUSE - NIGHT.

Jennifer is sitting at the kitchen table with Megan, a young medical resident still in her lab coat with her stethoscope on the table next to her.

the tow of them are drinking tea, relaxing.

MEGAN

I can't believe he actually just showed up on your doorstep like that. And with a Hotel key!

JENNIFER

Yeah, I couldn't believe it myself. I thought he was starting to loose interest in me. He's just been working too hard, I guess. . .

MEGAN

I wish Jeff was more like that. I can't seem to hold his interest at all, lately. Plus we're both always so tired with work and all. . . I don't know.

JENNIFER

How 's work going?

MEGAN

I always thought that the stories about how hellish resident's long hours were just there to scare people away. But the hours really are horrible.

The telephone rings.

JENNIFER

Just a sec, Megan... (she picks up the phone)... Hello?

During the phone conversation, the scene will transfer back af forth between INT. ALEX'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT, and INT. JENNIFER'S KITCHEN - NIGHT.

ALEX 1

Hi, Jen!

JENNIFER

Alex, I thought you were going to sleep.

ALEX 1

Um, I just thought I'd call. No reason.

JENNIFER

Didn't you get enough of me this afternoon?

ALEX 1

This afternoon? . . .

JENNIFER

Yes, this afternoon! You haven't forgotten already, have you?

ALEX 1

Oh... uh... right... Look, could you come over for a while?

JENNIFER

Alex, you know I'm with Megan. Are you all right?

ALEX 1

Yeah, I'm O.K. Sorry...

JENNIFER

Look, I've got to go. You're sure you're O.K.?

ALEX 1

Yeah, I guess...

JENNIFER

I'll call you tomorrow, All right?

ALEX 1

All right.

Jennifer hangs up the phone and looks at Megan.

MEGAN

What was that all about?

JENNIFER

I really don't know, I told you he was acting weird.

MEGAN

Well, I think it's cute.

JENNIFER

Yeah, he is, isn't he?

INT. ALEX'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

We see Alex 1 with the phone still in his hand. He looks more confused than ever. Slowly he puts the phone down and moves to the workshop.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex 1 has been transcribing his notes on a word processor. He finishes typing up a note when the note that Alex 2 left on his arrival.

ALEX'S RECORDED VOICE

I can't believe it. It seems to have worked. No problems I can see, but I'll have to run some tests. . .

As the note plays, Alex 2 frowns, confused. He listens to the message again, shrugs, and moves on.

INT./EXT. MONTAGE

Here a montage of scenes follows:

1. Alex 2 and Jennifer making love in the Hotel room, afternoon light streaming through the windows.

2. Alex 1 sitting at his desk, working on the designs for the machine. He pushes away the plans, and looks at the picture of him and Jennifer.

3. Alex 2 and Jennifer in an Italian Restaurant. Jennifer sucks a very long piece of spaghetti into her mouth, which splatters sauce on the end of her nose. Alex 2 wipes it off laughing.

4. Megan gets a message from the receptionist at the nurses station. Jennifer has broken a date for that night.

5. Alex 2 and Jennifer walking in the park. They stop near a pond to admire two swans.

6. Alex 1 sitting on the boat, alone, throwing stones into the water.

7. Megan sits with a cup of coffee in the hospital cafeteria. She scowls as she sips the coffee, puts it down and rubs her eyes.

INT. HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT

Jennifer is riding on Alex 2's back as Alex 2 unlocks his door and enters, throwing Jennifer onto the bed. They laugh and play for a few moments and then calm down. Alex 2 gets up and pours more champagne.

JENNIFER

So, when is your apartment going to be finished?

ALEX 2

I have no idea. When the painters found the dry rot, well, I guess I should have gotten rid of that apartment a long time ago. I'm waiting on an estimate from the carpenters now. Hey, have you heard anything from Megan lately?

JENNIFER

Not since Wednesday. I think that she's upset with me.

ALEX 2

Upset with you? Why?

JENNIFER

I don't know. we just haven't been getting along well lately.

ALEX 2

I'm sorry.

JENNIFER

Yeah, me too.

ALEX 2

Well, why don't you take your mind off of your worries. Come here. (They embrace on the couch). You know that I think that you are one of the most beautiful, most intelligent, most wonderful people I have ever known?

JENNIFER

(blushing) Shut up, Alex, and kiss me.

ALEX 2

Works every time.

Alex 2 goes to kiss her, but instead he gets hit in the face with a playfully thrown pillow. Alex 2 grabs a pillow and begins to fight her back.

INT. JENNIFER'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

The phone is ringing. Jennifer's answering machine answers and Jennifer's recorded message begins.

JENNIFER'S ANSWERING MACHINE

. . . So, if you'll leave your name and number, I'll call you as soon as I can! Caio! BEEP. . .

INT. MEGAN'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

On the other end of the line, Megan is sitting, looking very disappointed. As the message ends, Megan speaks. She looks as if she has been crying, and that she might start again at any moment.

MEGAN

Um, Jennifer? I really need to talk to you. I got into a fight with Jeff today. I don't think we'll be seeing each other any more. Could you give me a call? Um. Thanks... Bye.

Megan hangs up, grabs a Kleenex and blows her nose.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

Alex 1 is working on the machine. He gets up and pours himself a drink and walks about the room, pacing, until he is drawn to a picture hung on the wall. The picture is of Jennifer. He sips his drink and stares at the picture for a few moments. He shakes his head and walks out, grabbing his coat.

INT. DELI - DAY

Alex 1 has just finished a corned beef sandwich. The WAITER brings Alex 1 the check. Alex 1 gets his wallet out and searches through it. He searches through it again, frowning. He looks up at the waiter, embarrassed.

ALEX 1

Um, Al. I can't seem to find my credit card. I think I left it at home. . .

AL THE WAITER

That's all right Mr. McKinnon. I'll hold on to your bill and you can pay me next time.

ALEX 1

I'm sorry, Al. I feel really embarrassed about it. I have no idea where. . .it might. . .be.

AL THE WAITER

Don't worry Mr. McKinnon. I'll see you later this week.

ALEX 1

Thanks, Al. . .

Alex 1 exits.

INT. ALEX'S KITCHEN - DAY

Alex 1 picks up the phone, taking out the phone book. He looks up a number and dials.

ALEX 1

Hello, MasterCard? I was wondering if you could do me a favor. I am working on my expense account at work and I was wondering if you could tell me what my last 5 charges were. Thank you, I'll wait.

INT. HOTEL - DAY

Alex 2 and Jennifer are in bed together. They are both sleeping. The late afternoon sun filters into the window. The telephone rings, and Alex 2 sits up to answer it. Slowly he rolls out of bed, pulling the blankets off of Jennifer's naked body as he does so. She frowns and groggily gathers the blankets back around her. Alex 2 picks up the phone and answers.

ALEX 2

Hello?

ALEX 1(VOICE)

I want to know what the hell is going on!

ALEX 2

(Whispering) What are you doing calling me? Don't you know what that could do? Go away!

JENNIFER

Alex. who is it?

ALEX 1

Yeah, I know what it could do!

JENNIFER

Can't you tell them to call back later?

ALEX 2

(to Jennifer) This will only take a minute, Jen. (To phone) We shouldn't have any contact. Trust me, I am doing the right thing. You just keep working and thing's will be fine.

ALEX 1

I'm not going to do anything until I get some answers! Now, do I have to come up there, or are you going to come down and meet me?

ALEX 2

We shouldn't meet. Don't you understand?

ALEX 1

Either you meet me in ten minutes, or I'm coming up there, and you'll have explaining to do to Jennifer too!

ALEX 2

All right, All right. I'll meet with you. where are you?

INT. HOTEL LOBBY - DAY

ALEX 1

I'm in the lobby downstairs.

ALEX 2

You're where?!?! Go home before somebody sees you! I'll meet you at the apartment All right?

ALEX 1

All right, but hurry up. If you don't show up, I'm going straight to Jennifer's house. Understand?

INT. HOTEL ROOM - DAY

Alex 2 hangs up the phone and goes back to Jennifer.

ALEX 2

Jen, I'm afraid I have to leave for a while.

JENNIFER

Why, who was that?

ALEX 2

That was the guys at the apartment. They ran into some trouble. It might take a while.

JENNIFER

All right. I'll see you tonight, then?

ALEX 2

Yeah, as soon as I clear things up. I'll call you.

Alex 2 gets up and begins dressing, and Jennifer slowly, reluctantly does the same.

INT. ALEX'S APARTMENT - DAY

Alex 1 is sitting in the armchair as Alex enters. He frowns.

ALEX 1

So this all isn't some sort of cruel joke. It really is you. What the hell do you think you're doing?

ALEX 2

I am trying to salvage our relationship with Jennifer. She left me because you neglected her.

ALEX 1

What do you mean, "she left." You mean she actually breaks things off?

ALEX 2

Yes, Alex, that's exactly what I mean. I really can't believe that stunt you pulled. We really shouldn't have made contact.

ALEX 1

You should have worried about that before. Just don't do anything stupid and we'll be all right. I just want you to go back where you came from.

ALEX 2

I can't. I sent the machine back. I can't do anything until the machine is finished, which is your job!

ALEX 1

Wait a minute! My job? What makes it my job and not yours?

ALEX 2

I'm busy with Jennifer!

ALEX 1

Yeah, and I'll bet that's an incredible hardship on you.

ALEX 2

Wait a minute, are you Jealous?

ALEX 1

Of course I am jealous. Why shouldn't I be jealous. I don't care if it is you with her. All I know is that it isn't me.

ALEX 2

I'm sorry Alex, I didn't think. . .

ALEX 1

I know you didn't think. that's the whole problem.

ALEX 2

So what do you suggest we do?

ALEX 1

I suggest we trade off now and then, and you do the work on the machine while I spend time with Jennifer.

ALEX 2

Sounds fair, I guess, but I don't see how we could pull it off.

ALEX 1

If we plan carefully and we keep our heads, what could go wrong? She can't tell us apart. If we're careful, it'll work.

ALEX 2

I don't know. I don't want to take the chance of screwing things up. I risked a lot to come back like this.

ALEX 1

You're damn right you did. . .

ALEX 2

If Jennifer ever found out...

ALEX 1

If Jennifer ever found out she'd never believe, and if you don't agree I guarantee she'll find out.

ALEX 2

. . . I guess you're right.

ALEX 1

Look, this way we can even spend more time with her. We'll have all the time in the world to spend with her.

ALEX 2

You haven't left me much choice. I guess it's a deal.

ALEX 1

It's the only way Alex. So, lets drink to it, shall we? (Alex 1 pours Alex a drink). "Frenchie, this looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

They drink.

EXT. JENNIFER'S FRONT PORCH - DAY

Jennifer has returned to her apartment, and Megan is waiting for her on the porch.

JENNIFER

Megan? What are you doing here?

MEGAN

I tried to call you, but you never answered.

JENNIFER

I was with Alex. Are you all right?

MEGAN

Yes. . . No. . . Oh, I don't know!

JENNIFER

Look, why don't you come inside and I'll make some tea, and we can talk about it. All right?

MEGAN

Yeah, O.K.

They get up and go inside.

INT. ALEX'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

Alex 2 and Alex 1 are still at the apartment. Alex 1 has gotten dressed up for the evening, and Alex 2 is primping him, adjusting his tie, removing lint form his suit lapels, and coaching him on how he should act toward Jennifer.

ALEX 2

Now remember what I said about this afternoon. You talked about the boat, but you didn't want to think about work, so you talked about her new account. Talk about her more than us. . .

ALEX 1

I know, I know already. God, will you quit worrying? I swear I'm not going to screw things up. You just worry about the machine.

ALEX 2

All right, I'm still not sure about all of this.

ALEX 1

I had better go before I'm late.

ALEX 2

I really hope this is the right thing.

ALEX 1

Of course it is. Quit worrying. See you tomorrow.

ALEX 2

Yeah, tomorrow. . .

Alex 2 frowns but says nothing.

Alex 1 leaves the apartment, smiling.

INT. JENNIFER'S KITCHEN - NIGHT

Megan and Jennifer are talking over their tea.

MEGAN

God, I hate men sometimes. They can be such assholes?

JENNIFER

Yeah, I know. Even Alex 2 can be a jerk.

MEGAN

Why do they always have to be such... Children?

JENNIFER

I think they just get confused with all that testosterone running around in their systems. Megan, can I ask you something?

MEGAN

What?

JENNIFER

How come you haven't called me this week?

MEGAN

Well, you just seemed occupied with. . . (at this point there is a knock at the door). . .

JENNIFER

Just a second. . .

Jennifer gets up to open the door. It is Alex 1, bearing flowers.

ALEX 1

Good evening my lady, are you prepared to be escorted to dinner? (Alex 1 hands Jen the flowers). Oh, hi Megan.

MEGAN

Hi, Alex.

ALEX 1

Hey, I'm not interrupting anything, am I?

MEGAN

Oh, no. Not at all.

ALEX 1

Good. You ready?

JENNIFER

Um, yeah, hold on a minute. (to Megan) Are you going to be all right?

MEGAN

Yeah, I'll be fine.

JENNIFER

Would you like to join us?

MEGAN

No, that's all right. I'll be fine.

JENNIFER

Stay as long as you like. Just lock the door when you leave. You're sure you don't want to come?

MEGAN

No, thank you. I'll be o.k. I'm just going to finish my tea and go home.

JENNIFER

Call me tomorrow?

MEGAN

Yeah.

Jennifer gives Megan a hug, and then Alex 1 and Jennifer head for the door.

ALEX 1

Goodnight, Megan.

MEGAN

'Night, Alex.

Alex 1 and Jennifer leave Megan sitting alone, slowly sipping her tea in silence.

EXT. CAR-NIGHT

In the car Alex 1 and Jennifer are talking.

ALEX 1

What's wrong with Megan?

JENNIFER

She had a terrible fight with Jeff yesterday. She's just not too happy with men in general right now.

ALEX 1

Can't blame her for that. Most men are assholes.

JENNIFER

That's funny, that's exactly what I said!

ALEX 1

Well, we're not all assholes.

JENNIFER

I guess I do know a few men who aren't total assholes.

ALEX 1

Just a few?

JENNIFER

Just a few.

ALEX 1

Like who, for instance?

JENNIFER

Well. . . Ghandi.

ALEX 1

That's one.

JENNIFER

I don't think Kevin Costner's a total asshole.

ALEX 1

That's the best you can do, Kevin Costner?

JENNIFER

Well, there is this one guy, Alex McKinnon. . .

ALEX 1

Now he's a perfect Gentleman.

JENNIFER

Well. . . Most of the time. . .

ALEX 1

Most of the time, huh?

JENNIFER

Yeah... I guess...

ALEX 1

You guess! (he begins to tickle her) You only guess?

JENNIFER

(laughing) All right, all right, Alex McKinnon is a perfect gentleman. . .(Alex stops tickling her and she catches her breath) . . . Most of the time!

ALEX 1

Oh, you're going to get it now. . .

JENNIFER

O.K., O.K all of the time. But you won't be if you don't kiss me this instant. . .

ALEX 1

Oh, very happy to oblige, M'Lady.

Alex 1 kisses her and then pulls away. He smiles at her and then starts the car.

ALEX 1

Well, what do you say we get something to eat.

INT. WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex 2 sits at home working on the machine. His stomach growls. He looks at his watch and mumbles something to the effect that he's going to get something to eat. He grabs his coat and leaves the apartment.

EXT. DELI - NIGHT

We see Alex 2 enter the Deli a few blocks away. He sits down and orders. We also see Alex 1 and Jennifer walking down the same street, about a block away, towards the deli.

ALEX 1

I'm sorry about the restaurant loosing our reservations. I'm sure I made them...

JENNIFER

It's not your fault, Alex. I am getting pretty hungry though.

ALEX 1

Well, were not going to get in anyplace fancy tonight. I know a great little deli about a block from here. They make great corned beef.

JENNIFER

Oh, I don't care, anything. I'm starved!

INT. DELI - NIGHT

Alex 2 drops his napkin on the floor. He leans under the table to pick it up. Alex 1 and Jennifer enter. Alex 2 hears them talking, startling him so he hits his head on the bottom of the table. He peeks up over the table, rubbing his head. He looks around, but there is no place to go without being seen, so he just ducks down in the both where he is sitting. Alex 1 and Jennifer go to the counter to order.

Alex 2 looks around and sees a newspaper on a nearby table, Just behind Alex 1. He slowly gets up and quickly snatches the paper, causing Alex 1 to look around and see Alex 2. Alex 1 does a huge take, and Alex 2 waves him back around. Alex 2 ducks under the newspaper just as Jennifer turns around.

JENNIFER

Alex?... I just said there's a booth right there, come on and let's sit down.

ALEX 1

Uh...Uhm...Jennifer,...Uh, I don't think we should eat here...Um, the corned beef really isn't all that good...

JENNIFER

Alex! I'm hungry. I thought you liked this place...

ALEX 1

Well, I uh...changed my mind.

JENNIFER

Oh, Alex, I haven't eaten since that croissant this morning. Can't we please just eat here?

ALEX 1

Well, Um...all right.

Alex 1 suddenly gets pegged in the back of the head with a napkin wad as Jennifer gets the sandwiches at the counter. He turns around to see Alex 2 with a straw aimed at him. Alex 2 puts the straw down and motions to Alex 1 to leave. Alex 1 gestures to Alex 2 as if to say, "What the hell do you want me to do?" Jennifer turns around to see Alex 1 gesturing wildly. Alex 2 quickly ducks behind the newspaper before she sees him. She looks at Alex 1.

JENNIFER

What are you doing?

ALEX 1

Oh, nothing, hon. Ready to go?

JENNIFER

Go... I want to eat here!

ALEX 1

Well, all right, but there's no place to sit. . .

JENNIFER

What's the matter with you? There's a place right over there, come on.

Jennifer hands Alex 1 the sandwiches, grabs his arm and takes him to a booth directly behind Alex 2. Jennifer sits with her back to Alex 2. Both Alex 1 and Alex 2 look very uncomfortable. Alex 2 listens attentively to Alex 1 and Jennifer's conversation.

JENNIFER

What time do you have, Alex?

ALEX 1

(looks at his watch, digital) It's 7:50.

JENNIFER

We'd better eat fast, then. I don't want to miss the beginning. I'm so glad you decided to take me to see Casablanca.

ALEX 1

I could see it a million times and never get tired of it.

JENNIFER

Really?

ALEX 1

Yeah, I mean, Bogart is great, and Ingred Bergman is one of the three sexiest women in the world.

JENNIFER

Oh, really. Who are the other two?

ALEX 1

Wouldn't you like to know?

JENNIFER

No, I'm really curious.

ALEX 1

Well, Uma Thurman is one. . .

JENNIFER

Yeah? And who's the third?

ALEX 1

Well. . . you.

JENNIFER

Oh, give me a break, Alex. . .

ALEX 1

No, really, I really think that you are the most beautiful, sexy woman I have ever known. . .

Alex 2 starts choking on his corned beef as he hears this. It is obvious that he is starting to become jealous. Jennifer starts to turn around at the commotion, but Alex 1 begins talking again and grabs her attention.

ALEX 1

You know, Jen, I really look forward to the time I get to spend with you. I mean, I don't know what I would do without you. I love you.

JENNIFER

Oh, Alex. You really are sweet. I love you, too.

Alex 1 and Jennifer lean over the table and kiss each other. Alex 2 slams his glass down on the table very loudly. Jennifer jumps at the noise and nearly bites Alex 1's lip off.

JENNIFER

Oh, Alex, I'm sorry. Are you all right?

ALEX 1

(his lip is bleeding) No, no, it's fine. I'm O.K.

JENNIFER

I am sorry Alex. Here, let me get it.

She gets a napkin and starts trying to fix his cut lip.

JENNIFER

You know, it is a sign of affection when a cat bites you? Just consider it a love bite.

ALEX 1

(Playfully sarcastic) I'll cherish it. You finished with your sandwich?

JENNIFER

I'll have them wrap the rest of it up and we'll take it with us.

ALEX 1

All right, lets go.

They go up the counter and have the sandwich wrapped. When Alex 1 turns around to look, Alex 2 has vanished.

EXT. THEATER - NIGHT

As Alex 1 and Jennifer walk to the theater, they pass a man in dark sunglasses and a trenchcoat reading a newspaper and we see it is Alex 2. He begins to tail them. He follows them to the theater and buys a ticket to the film once they've gone inside.

INT. ALEX'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Back at Alex's apartment, the clock reads 3:00AM. Alex 2 sits alone in his robe. The door opens and Alex 1 walks in.

ALEX 2

You're back rather late...

ALEX 1

I wasn't going to come back, but I figured you'd be waiting up after the way you acted at the deli, and at the theater...

Alex 2 begins to react but Alex 1 cuts him off.

ALEX 1

Oh, I can't blame you. I'm sure I would have done the same thing. It doesn't make it any less stupid.

ALEX 2

But,. . .

ALEX 1

Hold on, I'm not done. Look, It's silly for us to be jealous of each other. We are the same person, after all, aren't we?

ALEX 2

Yeah, I guess...

ALEX 1

We both love Jennifer, and we're trying to do the best for her. We have to work together.

ALEX 2

All right...

ALEX 1

Good, Now, we have to make the machine an equal priority with our time with Jennifer. We'll continue to switch off back and forth and just try to get through the next couple of weeks.

ALEX 2

Yeah, I guess you're right.

ALEX 1

Of course I'm right. Just like you were right earlier. So why don't we get some sleep, huh?

ALEX 2

Yeah, Um, how are we going to work this?

ALEX 1

We'll switch off, bed and couch. Even though you probably don't deserve it , I'll let you have the bed first.

ALEX 2

There's no need to be patronizing. You were the one who threatened to go straight to Jennifer if you didn't get to participate.

ALEX 1

If you told me you'd have done anything different, you'd be a liar. Goodnight Alex.

ALEX 2

(sighing in frustration) Goodnight.

Alex 2 turns to walk upstairs.

ALEX 1

Oh, by-the-way, Alex?

ALEX 2

Yeah?

Alex 2 turns back to Alex 1 just in time to get Alex 1's fist in his mouth. Alex 2 falls into the chair behind him. He wipes his lip with his hand, looking at the trickle of blood on his finger.

ALEX 2

What the hell was that for?!

ALEX 1

Sorry, Alex, but we have to match. Remember?

Alex 1 smiles as he points to his own lip, slightly swollen with the cut still slightly visible.

ALEX 2

Goodnight, Alex.

ALEX 1

(Stifling a chuckle) Goodnight.

INT. FRONT PORCH - NIGHT

Alex 1 is dressed to go out with Jennifer. He is standing at the doorway.

ALEX 1

... and remember, be out of the house by 9:30. Make sure the door to the bedroom is blocked off. I don't want her suspecting anything it isn't painted.

ALEX 2

All right, I got it. Go on and have fun. I'll see you late tonight or early tomorrow.

Alex 1 nods and walks off to the car.

INT. ALEX'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Alex 2 is sitting, reading a book. He looks at his watch. It says 7:40. The clock next to him says 8:40.

INT. ALEX'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Alex 2 is still reading, though he has shifted to a laying position. He glances down at his watch. It still says 7:40. He taps it, seeing that the second hand was stuck. It starts moving again. He turns around and looks at the clock, which says 9:38.

The sound of a key is heard in the front door look. Alex 2 jumps up and hides behind the sofa.

Jennifer and Alex 1 enter, joking and laughing. They sit on the sofa together, and Alex 1 puts a movie into the VCR and turns on the television. He begins to fast forward through the FBI warning when Alex 2 pops up from behind the sofa. Alex 1's sees him, and his eyes become huge. Alex 2 quickly pops his head back down again when Alex 1 sees him. He stops the VCR.

ALEX 1

Uhm, Jennifer. I just remembered. The carpenters said we probably shouldn't stay in here for too long. Maybe we should watch this at your house.

JENNIFER

Why?

ALEX 1

They said we probably shouldn't breath the dust.

JENNIFER

Oh, Alex. I just got comfortable.

ALEX 1

I'm sorry, but we really shouldn't stay. Come on.

JENNIFER

Oh, all right.

They get up, gather the movie, and exit. Alex 1 glares at Alex 2 when he pops his head up from behind the couch.

INT. WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex 2 is sitting at the desk. Alex 1 enters.

ALEX 1

God, what were you doing? You should have been out of here by then.

ALEX 2

I'm sorry, Alex. My watch stopped.

ALEX 1

Well, that's all right. Just be more careful next time.

ALEX 2

Yeah.

INT. JENNIFER'S OFFICE - DAY

Jennifer arrives at work and stares at her calendar. The current date, November 14, marked by her desk clock is precisely one day before a deadline marked in her daybook, November 15 circled in red with the words "Jenson Presentation Today!" in bold letters.

Jennifer sits down, and sets to work.

INT. JENNIFER'S OFFICE - LATER DAY

The phone rings, and Jennifer answers.

INT. ALEX'S HOUSE - DAY

(The scene will move back and forth from INT. ALEX'S HOUSE - DAY, to INT - JENNIFER'S OFFICE - DAY as appropriate).

Alex 2 is on the other end of the line with Jennifer. Alex 1 is sitting nearby, listening.

ALEX 2

Hi, Jen. How about some lunch?

JENNIFER

Oh, I'm sorry, Alex, but I can't. I have a deadline tomorrow.

ALEX 2

Are you sure you wouldn't like me to bring you something?

JENNIFER

Yes, thanks, Alex. I'm sure. I really don't have the time.

ALEX 2

Well, how about dinner?

JENNIFER

No, I'm sorry, I can't do that either, Alex. I'm going to be here for quite a while. I'll call you tomorrow.

ALEX 2

All right. If you need anything, give me a call. I'm finishing some last minute details with the painters.

JENNIFER

All right, Alex. Wish me luck.

ALEX 2

Good luck, hon.

JENNIFER

Thanks, Love. Bye.

Jennifer hangs up the phone.

Alex 2 turns to Alex 1 as he hands the phone over to him so be hung up.

ALEX 2

Looks like we're on our own today.

ALEX 1

Well, that's OK. It will give us a chance to make the apartment look believably painted.

ALEX 2

All right. Let's get started.

INT. JENNIFER'S OFFICE - DAY

We see Jennifer's desk clock strike 12:05. She is eating a sandwich with one hand, drawing with the other.

Megan's head pops into the doorway.

MEGAN

Hi, Jen. I just stopped by to see if you wanted to go get some lunch.

JENNIFER

Hi, Megan. I'm sorry. I just don't have time.

MEGAN

Oh, that's all right. I sort of expected that you'd be busy.

JENNIFER

I'll give you a call tomorrow and we'll do something.

MEGAN

OK. Good luck.

JENNIFER

Thanks, Megan.

Megan exits and Jennifer continues to work, her paintbrush gently applying paint to her paper.

INT. ALEX'S BEDROOM - EVENING

A large paintbrush is applying trim to a door frame of the bedroom in Alex's apartment. Both Alex 2 and Alex 1 are covered in paint, but the apartment looks rather nice.

ALEX 2

Well, that about does it.

ALEX 1

Yeah, and just in time, too. I'm starving.

ALEX 2

That leaves us the rest of the evening to figure out what to do about the machine.

ALEX 1

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Dinner first, then work.

ALEX 2

So what are you waiting for? Let's get cleaned up and go.

They exit.

INT. JENNIFER'S OFFICE NIGHT

Evening arrives and we see Jennifer still hard at work as her colleagues and co-workers are leaving to go home. She picks up the phone, looking on a piece of paper with a Pizza delivery number on it.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

The two Alex's are working hard. Alex 1 is going over some drawings and assembling a part with a soldering iron to match them. Alex 2 is looking over Data on the Computer Monitor.

ALEX 1

Well, if I had any doubts about you being me, they're clearly cone now. I'm still amazed it all actually works. How's it going over there?

ALEX 2

Come here, I need to show you something, Alex.

Alex 1 puts down the drawings and the parts and goes over to him.

ALEX 1

What is it?

ALEX 2

Since there are two of us now, I've been figuring out how we're going to "reconverge". I think I've figured it out.

ALEX 1

What do we have to do?

ALEX 2

Some of this is going to be obvious, but bear with me. Now, I have traveled backwards in time. That means that I am you a month from now.

ALEX 1

Right.

ALEX 2

So, as far as I can tell, all we have to do is finish the machine, and then you have to jump back in time to become me.

ALEX 1

Sounds easy.

ALEX 2

We have a time limit, though. You have to make the jump backwards in time no later than I made the jump back.

ALEX 1

What do you mean?

ALEX 2

I sent the machine back to the point where I left. It will arrive on November 30 at 1:41AM. That machine has not been completed yet.

ALEX 1

So, if we don't build the machine, when it arrives it'll be a paradox, How can it exist if it was never built which would disrupt time itself.

ALEX 2

Right.

ALEX 1

In other words, we have a deadline.

ALEX 2

Exactly. Also, if for some reason you are unable to make the jump the same paradox happens with us. How can I, the future Alex, exist here with you if you, the past Alex, never jump back in time the way I did.

ALEX 1

So, we'll just have to be careful and make sure we finish the machine in plenty of time.

ALEX 2

And since I've already worked out most of the bugs, we'll still have plenty of time with Jennifer.

ALEX 1

Sounds easy enough. I'll start ordering the equipment tomorrow. I don't think it'll take us more than a week to put it together.

ALEX 2

Which leaves us a week to test and refine it before we jump. That should be plenty of time.

ALEX 1

Great. Why don't you keep work on the main unit and I'll start assembling the pump.

They both continue working.

INT. JENNIFER'S FOYER - NIGHT

Jennifer walks into the house. She looks a mess. She sighs and leans on the door. She looks at the clock which reads 10:13PM.

INT. JENNIFER'S BEDROOM - DAY

The alarm clock is ringing and reads 6:00AM. Jennifer groans, frowns, and slowly rises.

INT. JENNIFER'S OFFICE - DAY

Jennifer is sitting in her chair, slumped over and exhausted. The clock reads 4:00PM. The phone rings and she picks it up.

JENNIFER

Hello, this is Jennifer...

ALEX 1

Hiya, hon! How did your presentation go?

JENNIFER

Hi, Alex. I'm surprised they didn't get up and walk out.

ALEX 1

Well, at least they stayed to hear you out. Sorry you didn't get the account, though.

JENNIFER

Oh, we got the account.

ALEX 1

Well congratulations, then! They must have liked something. I'll bet you were wonderful.

JENNIFER

Thanks, Alex, but I assure you I was horrid. They had already decided to give us the account before they came in. I'm just lucky I didn't make them change their minds.

ALEX 1

Well, come out tonight and we'll celebrate getting the account.

JENNIFER

Really, Alex, I'm not much in the mood to celebrate...

ALEX 1

Well, come out with me anyway. It'll do you some good after such a stressful day.

JENNIFER

All right...pick me up after work so I don't have to walk home.

ALEX 1

Sure, hon. I'll be there in an hour.

JENNIFER

O.K. See you then.

ALEX 1

All right, bye.

INT. ALEX'S FOYER - NIGHT

Alex 1 is getting ready to leave to pick up Jennifer.

ALEX 1

You've got time to work, but I'm bringing Jen home at ten, so you've got to be out of here.

ALEX 2

Got it. 10:00. Have fun. Don't do anything I wouldn't do.

Alex 1 smiles, winks and walks out

INT. JENNIFER'S OFFICE - NIGHT

The lights are off in Jennifer's office. the clock reads 5:08PM. The phone rings.

INT. HOSPITAL - NIGHT

Megan is at the nurses station, holding the phone, listening to it ring. After a few more rings, she hangs up.

EXT. MOVIE THEATER - NIGHT

Jennifer and Alex 1 exit the theater, arguing as they walk to the car.

JENNIFER

Look, Alex. I just didn't like the movie. All right? It just didn't do anything for me.

ALEX 1

Well, I thought it was great.

JENNIFER

I'm glad. Can we go now?

Alex 2 says nothing and opens the door for Jennifer. they get in and Alex 2 drives away.

INT. ALEX'S CAR - NIGHT

We see Alex 1 and Jennifer in Alex's car. A radio announcer gives a weather report, mentioning heavy electrical storms that night. He finishes the report and "Dream a Little Dream" comes on the radio. Jennifer looks at Alex 1. Her frown softens a little, and she holds Alex 1's hand. We see an intersection through Alex's front windshield. The light moves to Yellow and Alex 1 slows down. He stops just before it turns red.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex 2 is working. He looks at his watch. It says 9:14PM. He continues working as we focus on the clock, which says 10:03PM. The calendar reads November 23.

INT. TIRED WOMAN'S CAR - NIGHT

We see the interior of another car. A WOMAN at the wheel, in her early 30's. She looks very tired and is having trouble keeping her eyes open.

INT. ALEX'S CAR - NIGHT

We again see the light from Alex 1's point of view as it changes from Red to green. Alex 1 slowly puts the car into gear and begins pulling out into the intersection.

INT. TIRED WOMAN'S CAR - NIGHT

We see the dozing woman in her rear view mirror, with the red light showing clearly through the windshield as she nods off.

EXT. INTERSECTION - NIGHT

We see the intersection from high above. Alex 1 pulls completely into the intersection and we see the two cars collide.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex 2 picks up a mug from his desk to sip, but it is empty. He gets up to fill it.

INT. ALEX'S KITCHEN - NIGHT

Alex 2 opens the fridge, grabs a Pepsi, and pours it into the mug. Lightning flashes outside the window, and Alex 2 looks up as a moment later the thunder rumbles. As he picks up the cup to take a sip, he notices the clock, which now reads 10:20PM. He chokes, and looks at his watch. It says 9:14PM.

ALEX 2

Oh, no. Not again!

Alex 2 runs out of the kitchen, leaving the Pepsi behind.

EXT. ALEX'S FRONT PORCH - NIGHT

Alex 2 steps out of the doorway, putting on his jacket. He fumbles with his keys in the door, drops them, picks them up, then rushes off the porch and down the street.

EXT STREET - NIGHT

Alex 2 is walking down the street, whistling.

ALEX 2

I've got to get that watch fixed.

Sirens are heard and an ambulance rushes by. Alex 2, follows down the street. As he turns the corner, he sees the ambulance pull up beside Alex's car, surrounded by people and flashing police lights. He sees Jennifer, battered and in tears, and he sees the paramedics working on a bloody Alex 1 while the ambulance drivers take out the stretcher to load him in. Alex 2 freezes. After a few moments, folks begin to gather near where Alex 2 is standing. He takes one last look as Alex 1 is loaded onto the ambulance and he runs.

EXT. STREET - NIGHT

Alex 2 sees a taxi and flags it down. He quickly jumps inside and the ambulance speeds off.

EXT. MEGAN'S FRONT PORCH - NIGHT

Alex 2 knocks on the door. When there is no answer, he knocks harder. The porch light comes on and Megan looks out of the window. She frowns, and moves away from the window to open the door, not bothering to remove the chain.

MEGAN

Do you have any idea what time it is, Alex?

ALEX 2

I'm sorry, Megan. I need your help.

MEGAN

I can't believe this, you wake me up in the middle of the night...what makes you think I'd want to help you?

ALEX 2

I know things haven't been going well between us, lately, and I wouldn't bother you, but I don't have anywhere else to turn.

MEGAN

It's not Jennifer, is it? Nothing's happened to her, has it?

ALEX 2

No...I mean, I think she's o.k. It's worse than that. Please, you've got to help me, I just...

MEGAN

(Interrupting) All right, Alex. Just calm down. Why don't you come inside and I'll make some coffee.

She unlatches the chain and opens the door for Alex 2 to walk inside.

INT. MEGAN'S KITCHEN - NIGHT

Megan is standing with her back to the counter, wearing her bathrobe. She looks incredibly tired. She has a cup of coffee, nearly empty. Alex sits at the kitchen table. His coffee cup remains untouched and he sits staring at it, expressionless, as he finishes explaining.

ALEX

I saw them get into the ambulance and pull away, and then I came here. I didn't know what else to do.

MEGAN

(pauses, frowns) You really expect me to believe this, Alex?

ALEX

I...uh...you don't believe me?

MEGAN

I don't know. Look, maybe you had a drink too many. Maybe you fell and hit your head. Or maybe this is just your idea of some sick joke, but I don't buy it, Alex. Maybe you should just get up now and go before I get mad.

ALEX

But...

MEGAN

I won't tell Jennifer about this if you just get up quietly and leave.

ALEX

Please...Megan?

MEGAN

(voice harsher) Now, Alex!

Alex begins to say something, but thinks better of it, gets up nodding and moves toward the front door. He turns one last time toward Megan, but the look on her face is one not to be questioned, and Alex slowly leaves.

Megan watches the door close, picks up the coffee cups and begins to rinse them out. The telephone rings and Megan reaches over the counter to answer it.

MEGAN

Hello...Jennifer, slow down...Now start form the beginning...All right, now...Hold tight and I'll be there as fast as I can...I'm sure he'll be all right, Jen...

Megan hangs up and goes outside.

EXT. MEGAN'S STREET - NIGHT

Alex is walking, head sunk in confusion, away from Megan's house.

MEGAN

Alex, wait, come back.

Alex turns and runs back to her.

MEGAN

That was Jennifer on the phone. Her story was just like you said. According to her, you're in the hospital, unconscious.

ALEX

So you believe me?

MEGAN

Let's just say I'm willing to see for myself. But I'm warning you Alex, if this is some kind of joke, I'll have your head...

ALEX

It's no joke. What do we do?

MEGAN

You go back home an try to get some rest. I'll go to the hospital and try to calm Jennifer down and see just what the circumstances are. I'll meet you at your house when I get done at the hospital.

ALEX

Thank you, Megan. It means a lot to me.

MEGAN

Don't thank me. If it weren't for Jen, you'd probably be out of luck. Now go home. I have work to do.

Alex nods, tries to smile, turns and walks toward home.

INT. ALEX'S HOUSE - MORNING

Alex is sitting in his chair. He has fallen asleep waiting. The phone rings and Alex starts. On the second ring he picks up the phone, blinking away sleep. He looks like hell.

ALEX

Hello?

INT. HOSPITAL - MORNING

Megan is standing by the nurses station. She is dressed in a surgery gown. She doesn't look so hot either. She speaks quietly into the phone so no one else hears.

MEGAN

You sound groggy. Did you get some rest like I told you?

(We continue to shift back and forth between INT. ALEX'S HOUSE and INT. HOSPITAL as appropriate).

ALEX

Yeah, some. Uhm... How is he?

MEGAN

Not so good. We had to operate, but I don't know if he'll pull through. He might never regain consciousness. We had to put him on life support ... (pause)... Alex, are you all right?

Alex looks broken. His eye twitches slightly and he stares blankly. His eyes are very red, dark circles line them heavily.

MEGAN

Alex?

Alex snaps out of it enough to come back to the conversation.

ALEX

Yeah, I'm ...I'm all right. Um, how long 'till you know?

MEGAN

I'm not sure, Alex. It could be minutes, it could be days. I'm just not sure...The accident was really bad, Alex.

A look of worry passes over Alex's face

ALEX

How's Jennifer? She's not hurt is she?

MEGAN

Aside from a few minor cuts and bruises, she's all right. Physically. She's pretty shaken up, though. This is really hard on her. If I thought it would help, I'd tell her...

Megan looks over at Jennifer. She is sitting in a comfortable chair in the waiting lounge. She has a blanket wrapped around her. She has a bruised cheek, and a small cut on her chin which has been bandaged. She has a similar blank expression to Alex's. She is holding a cup of tea, but not drinking it. She is also shivering slightly. Somehow she looks worse off than Alex does.

MEGAN

We let her in to see him in post-op about 20 minutes ago, and we've just now got her calmed down enough to drink some tea. She's had quite a shock. I'm going to take her home to stay with me, see if I can't get her to sleep a little without giving her anything. I don't want her to be alone.

ALEX

Is she going to be all right? I mean, is there anything I can do?

MEGAN

I think the only thing any of us can do right now is rest, Alex.

ALEX

Megan, please, don't let him die. If he dies, everything's over...

MEGAN

Don't worry Alex. As long as he's on life support he won't die. Now don't worry about him and don't worry about Jennifer. They'll both be taken care of. There'll be time to worry after you rest.

ALEX

Megan...

MEGAN

What, Alex?

ALEX

Thank you for what you've done. I'm not sure what to do, but thank you...

MEGAN

You're welcome, Alex. I'll be in to check up on you tonight. I've got to go. You'll be all right?

ALEX

Yeah, I think so. Take good care of Jennifer.

MEGAN

I will. Bye, Alex.

ALEX

Bye.

Megan hangs up the phone and walks over to Jennifer, warmly touching her shoulder and beckoning her to follow. Jennifer slowly and weakly gets up.

INT. ALEX'S HOUSE - MORNING

Alex is sitting staring blankly, phone receiver still in his hand. Dial tone can be heard, and Alex's eye twitches again. after a moment the dial tone stops and the recorded message, "If you'd like to make a call, pease hang up and try again..." startles Alex out of his trance. He hangs up the phone, and slowly gets up out of the chair.

INT. ALEX'S BEDROOM - AFTERNOON

Alex rolls and tosses in his sleep. It is obvious that he is having a nightmare.

MONTAGE

The following images flash in front of Alex's minds eye:

1. Ambulance lights

2. Shattered glass

3. A bloody Alex2

4. The machine

5. The ambulance

6. Jennifer, crying

7. Blood on shattered glass

8. The machine, exploding

9. The cars colliding

10. Jennifer crying

INT. ALEX'S BEDROOM - AFTERNOON

Alex finally awakes from his nightmare, sweaty, breathing heavily, sobbing.

INT. ALEX'S KITCHEN - AFTERNOON

Alex sips slowly from a cup of tea. He still has a blank expression on his face, but the sleep seems to have done him some good. He sits with a quiet desperation on his face. Alex is doodling on a sheet of paper, at first with some intensity, but finally he scratches it out, tears it up, and starts again.

INT. ALEX'S KITCHEN - LATER AFTERNOON

Alex sits in the chair at the kitchen table. His head is in his hands resting on the table, and he is surrounded by crumpled pieces of paper. The doorbell rings, startling Alex. He wipes the tears from his face and rises to answer it.

EXT. ALEX'S FRONT PORCH - DAY

Megan is standing on Alex's porch. She looks beat, dark circles under her eyes. She also looks as if she's used to it, as most hospital personnel are. She carries herself with an air of tired cool headedness and authority. Alex opens the door.

MEGAN

Hi, Alex.

ALEX

Megan, hi. You look awful.

MEGAN

You don't look so spiffy yourself. Nice robe, though.

ALEX

Come in, I'll get you a cup of coffee.

They enter.

INT. ALEX'S FOYER - DAY

ALEX

(Taking Megan's coat) Um... how is she?

MEGAN

Jennifer's all right. Still shaken up. I finally broke down and gave her a small sedative so she could sleep a little better. The nightmares were keeping her up.

ALEX

Yeah, me too...

MEGAN

I left one of the nurses to watch over her.

ALEX

Any news...

MEGAN

No, nothing new. He's still on life support, and with that he'll at least stay alive...I have something to prepare you for, though, Alex...

ALEX

(A hint of desperation) Wait...Let me make you some coffee, or would you rather have some tea?

MEGAN

I think a huge dose of caffeine is in order...

ALEX

All right, come on.

They exit to the kitchen.

INT. KITCHEN- DAY

Megan is sits down at the table as Alex pushes away all the crumpled paper, a little self consciously, and sets a mug in front of her. A moment later he pours thick black coffee into the mug, and sits down. Megan takes a quick sip from the mug, licking her upper lip.

MEGAN

Thanks, Alex...Um...I have something to tell you. I don't think he's going to make it.

ALEX 2

Don't say that. He has to. He has to get better...

MEGAN

Alex, he hasn't changed since the surgery, and if he doesn't change soon, the hospital won't keep him on life support.

ALEX 2

(Surprised) Won't keep him on life support? What do you mean?

MEGAN

It's hospital policy that only family members can order a patient be sustained on life support an extended period. You don't have any living family.

ALEX 2

How soon?

MEGAN

With Jennifer around, I don't know. She's not family, but they might show some leniency with her around. They could shut it off as soon as tomorrow...

Alex 2 has his arms crossed tightly in front of his chest. A tear is beginning to form under his twitching eye.

ALEX 2

Can't... Can't you do something?

MEGAN

I'll do all I can, but that isn't much, Alex. I'm just a resident. The point is, we don't have much time.

ALEX 2

That's it, then. It's over.

MEGAN

What do you mean.

ALEX 2

If he dies, everything ends.

MEGAN

What?

ALEX 2

If he can't go back in time to become me, then I can't exist. My existence will be a paradox, which will break the natural laws which govern time.

MEGAN

You mean if he dies, time itself could be disrupted?

ALEX 2

Yes...

MEGAN

Well, why can't you just finish the time machine and go back and warn the other Alex?

ALEX 2

In a day? It took me weeks to assemble it the first time, and I can't get any money or go out and buy anything because I'm supposed to be in the hospital... I can't do it alone...

MEGAN

You don't have to do it alone. I'll help you. Come on, lets get started, what do you need.

Alex 2 looks at her. The slightest smile passes over his lips.

ALEX 2

I need you well rested, that's what I need. Go home and get some rest while I try and figure out When you've had some rest, come back and we'll see what we can do.

MEGAN

All right. You sure, you're all right?

ALEX 2

Yeah, thanks, Megan. Come on, I'll walk you out.

They exit.

MONTAGE

A series of scenes showing Alex 2 working on the machine, tinkering with intricate pieces, and trying to put the whole thing together. The scenes also show Megan at Higgins Scientific, buying things for Alex 2, giving a hand with the machine, and working at the hospital, trying to comfort Jennifer. One scene shows Alex 2 and Megan sitting together at the table eating. The montage ends with Megan walking into Alex 1's hospital room.

INT. ALEX'S HOSPITAL ROOM - DAY

As Megan enters, we see Jennifer in Alex 1's room, reading aloud to him. She is reading from The Wind in the Willows It is the chapter entitled "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" and she is reading the section where Rat and Mole first hear the pipes. She hasn't heard Megan come in, and for a moment she stops reading and talks to Alex 1.

JENNIFER

Oh, Alex, I wish I had some pipes to call you from your sleep. I wish you were here to share this day with me. It's such a beautiful day, Alex. We could just drop everything and go out on the boat and sit in the rocking waves...

Megan clears her throat to get Jennifer's attention.

JENNIFER

Oh, hi, Megan. I was just reading to him. This was always one of Alex's favorite books, I thought it might make him feel better...

MEGAN

Jennifer, we need to talk...

Megan sits down in a chair next to Jennifer.

MEGAN

I don't know how to explain this to you...

JENNIFER

I know... They want to take him off of life support. I overheard...

MEGAN

Jennifer, there's still some time. I think I can keep them from taking him off for a few more days. It's not much, but he seems to be gaining a little strength. Maybe it'll be enough. I don't know.

JENNIFER

Megan, I won't let them kill him. They can't take him off life support. Not yet.

MEGAN

It's not going to happen yet, Jen. If he makes an improvement soon, they may change their minds. I just want you to be prepared for the worst.

JENNIFER

Well the worst isn't going to happen. I won't let it, Megan. I wont...

MEGAN

All right, Jennifer. Just keep talking to him, keep him company. He needs that more than anything right now...

Megan hugs Jennifer, smiles, and walks out. As she goes out the door, she takes one last look at Jennifer, who has continued reading aloud.

INT. ALEX'S KITCHEN - DAY

Alex 2 is on the phone in the kitchen. Periodically he takes sips from a bottle of water.

ALEX 2

Can't you get any more time? We're going to be cutting it awfully short.

MEGAN

If nothing changes, they tell me they're going to want to do it on Friday.

ALEX 2

That doesn't leave us a lot of time.

MEGAN

Do you need me to bring you anything?

ALEX 2

Yeah, I nee some things from the hardware store. Got a pen and paper?

INT. ALEX'S HOUSE - DAY

The clock and calendar on Alex's desk read 1:30 PM on Friday, November 25. He stops and goes to the phone.

INT. ALEX 1'S ROOM - DAY

Megan is in Alex 1's room. A couple of other doctors, DR. HOWETT, a middle aged, balding, authoritative man, and DR. FRANKLIN, a younger protŽgŽe of Dr. Howett's, are there, as is Jennifer.

MEGAN

Jennifer, Dr. Howett and Dr. Franklin are here to talk to you...

JENNIFER

Tell them to go away, Megan. I don't have anything to talk about.

DR. HOWETT

Now, Ms.Murphy, we just need to discuss some things. I know this is difficult, but it is time to turn off Mr. McKinnon's life support. He's suffered enough, don't you think.

A nurse enters and whispers something to Megan.

MEGAN

Jennifer, I'll be right back. This is an important call.

JENNIFER

I won't let them do it, Megan. Tell them not to do it.

MEGAN

(Exiting) Doctor Howett, Maybe we could settle this later?

DR. HOWETT

I'm afraid not, Dr. Reiley. Miss Murphy? You can see things from my point of view, can't you?

Megan frowns, but walks into the hall.

INT. HOSPITAL HALL - DAY

His voice trails off as Megan steps out. She steps around the corner to the nurses station and picks up the phone.

MEGAN

Alex?

ALEX 2

Hi, Megan. How are things going there?

MEGAN

Not so good. They're going to turn off the life support really soon. Jennifer isn't taking it so well. How are things there?

ALEX 2

Well, everything seems to check out. At 2:15 I'll be throwing the switch.

MEGAN

I hope I can hold them off that long. If Jennifer gets too upset about this they may have to pull her out physically, and then they'll pull the plug as fast as they can.

ALEX 2

Thank you, Megan, for everything you've done. I'm sorry things have been so tense between us up 'till now. You're a wonderful person.

MEGAN

Thank you, Alex. I really misjudged you. You're a pretty wonderful person, yourself.

ALEX 2

Wish me luck.

MEGAN

Good luck, Alex... Uhm, If you make it, you know I won't remember any of this. I still won't like you.

ALEX 2

Yeah, I know. I'll always be grateful, though, Megan. thank you.

MEGAN

Bye, Alex...

She hangs up.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

Alex 2 also hangs up and moves to the computer console. All markers show green, indicating everything is ready to go.

Alex 2 picks up the recorder.

ALEX 2

Well, everything looks ready. I'll be leaving at precisely 2:15.

Alex 2 looks at the clock. It reads 1:53. Alex 2 hits the "warm up" button. He turns valves on the pump, and makes other adjustments. The pump and Main Unit begin warming up. The clock now reads 1:59:44

INT. HOSPITAL HALL - DAY

The hand on the clock above the nurses station changes from 1:59 to 2:00. The nurses at the station are working on various tasks. NURSE HELMS on the phone while NURSE ALBERT is filing. A loud crash is heard from a room across the hall. The room is room 214. The nurses intercom lights up at the button designated for room 214.

NURSE HELMS

Nurses station...

DR. FRANKLIN

(Over intercom) This is Dr. Franklin. We have a problem here...

JENNIFER

(Background on intercom) You stay away from him! Do you understand me?

A loud crash is heard.

DR. FRANKLIN

Could you call security, and bring some sedatives...

NURSE HELMS

Your usual, Doctor Franklin (she smirks at Nurse Albert).

DR. FRANKLIN

Not for me... for her (CRASH) Ow!

INT. ALEX'S HOSPITAL ROOM - DAY

Jennifer has just thrown a book which has hit Dr. Franklin in the back of the head. He rubs his head and scowls.

DR. FRANKLIN

Ms. Murphy, that was uncalled for!

JENNIFER

I won't let you kill him! Get out and leave us alone! (to Alex 1). It's O.K. Alex. I won't let them come near you.

MEGAN

Jennifer, I...

JENNIFER

You stay away, too, Megan! I thought you were my friend. But you're with them. Well I don't need you!

Dr. Howett tries to approach her, but she picks up the telephone and hurls it at him. It hits him above the right eye, and he falls. He rises, rubbing a nasty cut over his right eyebrow, blood smearing on his fingers. The clock behind the phone reads 2:08.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

The clock on Alex's desk now changes to 2:08. Alex 2 sits in the control chair of the machine. He puts a disk into the computer and presses "Load". He crosses his arms and waits.

INT. ALEX'S HOSPITAL ROOM - DAY

The clock in the hospital room reads 2:10. Jennifer is slumped between the arms of two security guards. she is muttering to herself, barely audible.

JENNIFER

Please, don't. You don't know what you are doing. Megan, please... help...

DR. FRANKLIN

(Putting away hypodermic needle) Well, she'll be alright now.

DR. HOWETT

(Holding gauze pad to forehead) You know, we'll probably get a lawsuit for this.

DR. FRANKLIN

Couldn't be helped. It is time to let this boy go, and I was afraid Ms. Murphy would hurt herself or one of us.

MEGAN

Maybe we should wait on this, Doctor. Maybe he'll improve. It has only been a few days...

DR. HOWETT

Dr. Reiley, you know that this decision hasn't been easy for me. The fact is that this boy hasn't shown any brain responses at all. He is brain dead, and this machine is only prolonging the inevitable. Now, I would like you to look after Ms. Murphy.

MEGAN

But...

DR. HOWETT

No buts. It is time to care for the living and let the dead go.

MEGAN

But Doctor!

DR. HOWETT

I mean it Megan! Go, now.

MEGAN

Yes, John.

Megan looks at Jennifer, and then at Alex 2, and then at the clock. It reads 2:14.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

As the clock reads 2:14, the computer shows the departure and arrival times and a blinking cursor reading "Ready". Alex 2 hits the return button, and begins throwing switches on top of the Main Unit.

INT. ALEX 1'S ROOM - DAY

Dr. Franklin hits the first of several shutoff switches on the life support. Alex 1's body jumps and the heart rate on the EEG increases.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

The clock on the screen reads 2:14:20. Alex 2 turns the valve to open the coolant pump, sending coolant into the Main Unit's casings.

INT. ALEX 1'S ROOM - DAY

Dr. Franklin turns off the valve to the oxygen tank. Alex 1's body begins shuddering more violently. The oxygen bag goes limp.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

The clock reads 2:14:45. "Standby" appears on the screen.

INT. ALEX 1'S ROOM - DAY

The heart rate decreases rapidly, slowing, slowing...

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

Alex 1's heart rate is still audible. The "Standby" signal goes out, and "GO" appears on the screen as the clock reads exactly 2:15:00. As the heart rate stops and the flatline alarm sounds, Alex 2 presses the go button, and the machine vibrates and fades from sight.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

The desk calendar says it is November 22. The Machine materializes in the middle of the room, forcing other pieces of equipment aside to make room.

Note: From this point on, the Alex 2 that has just jumped from November 25 to November 22 will be known as Alex 3 to keep him from being confused with the other two Alexes.

Alex 3 sits slumped in the command chair, disoriented. Smoke and steam and vapor fill the air.

Alex 2 and Alex 1 enter. They are still wearing the paint covered clothes, and Alex 2 is still chewing and wiping his mouth with a napkin.

ALEX 2

What the hell...?

ALEX 1

Oh no, not another one...

ALEX 2

Come here and give me a hand with him. Let's see if he's all right.

They go over to him and help him up.

ALEX 3

Did I make it...? Is it the 22nd?

ALEX 2

Yeah, you made it. What's up? Why'd you come?

ALEX 3

Hold on a sec... Let me catch my breath and I'll tell you everything...

Alex 3 pushes a couple of buttons and a flashing green message, "Charging" appears on the screen. The low whirr of a muffled generator is heard starting.

ALEX 3

There... That should do it.

They help Alex 3 into the kitchen.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Alex 3 is just finishing explaining the situation to the other two. They are sitting at the table, a half finished box of pizza on the side. As Alex 3 is speaking, Alex 1 silently offers him a slice of pizza, which Alex 3 declines, waving his hand, but not stopping his speech.

ALEX 3

... So, I had to come back. If I had stayed there any longer, everything would have been through...

Alex 3 stops and takes a sip of his beer.

ALEX 2

So what do we do now? Your being here makes the threat of creating a paradox even greater...

ALEX 3

I've thought of that. I will simply jump forward again to November 25th. That will give the two of you time to finish the machine. Then, just before I arrive, you (he points to Alex 2) have to jump back and give the warning, just like I'm doing.

ALEX 2

Sounds reasonable. As soon as you go, Alex and I will get started again on the machine.

ALEX 1

(Lifting his beer) A toast, to luck!

The three of them "clink" beer bottles and drink.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

Alex 3 is sitting in the command chair, and the machine is powering up. Alex 3 pulls a disk from one of the two disk drives.

ALEX 3

Here's a copy of the exact times for my arrival. (To Alex 1) Remember, tomorrow night, if you go out with Jennifer, stay indoors. Whatever you do, don't drive anywhere after 9:00PM. (To Both) And get your watches fixed...

ALEX 1

See ya Alex.

Alex 1 pats Alex 3 on the shoulder, and Alex 3 gives him the thumbs up, and presses the "GO" button. The machine vibrates and then slowly fades from view.

Alex 2 turns to Alex 1.

ALEX 2

Well, let's get to work...

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

The calendar on the desk says November 23, and the clock reads 11:48PM. Alex 2 is alone, working on the machine. He has power running to the main unit, and everything seems to be running well. Alex 2 smiles to himself and pours Pepsi into his mug and takes a sip.

EXT. STREET - NIGHT

Lightning flashes outside, and a clap of thunder is heard.

INT. JENNIFER'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Alex 1 and Jennifer are sitting snuggled on Jennifer's couch watching a tape of The Philadelphia Story on the television. Jennifer snuggles closer to Alex 1 at the sound of the thunder.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex 2 is making adjustments to the Main Unit with a soldering iron. He sets the iron down and picks up a screwdriver.

EXT. POWER LINES - NIGHT

A bolt of lightning strikes a power line, sparks flying in all directions.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

A surge of electricity pumps into Alex's house, causing the lights to flutter and go out. Sparks fly from the top of the main unit, sputtering, and finally all is dark.

INT. JENNIFER'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

The few lights that are on in Jennifer's house flicker and go out, and the television suddenly shuts off. When this happens, Jennifer snuggles even closer to Alex 1.

ALEX 1

Well, so much for the movie portion of the evening...

JENNIFER

Damn, and I was just getting into it. So, what do we do now?

ALEX 1

Oh, I don't know, what do you want to do?

JENNIFER

Shut up and kiss me.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex 2 has found a flashlight, and he is shining it around the room. The circle of light finds its way to the Main Unit. The small silver ball is charred and burnt, the wires melted. Smoke still rises from it.

ALEX 2

Damn!

Alex 2 bangs the flashlight against his thigh in frustration.

INT. JENNIFER'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Alex 1 and Jennifer are still kissing on the couch, though things have gotten more passionate. Suddenly the phone rings, startling the two of them. Jennifer answers the phone.

JENNIFER

Hello?

ALEX 2

(Trying to disguise his voice, but sounding like a cartoon character) Hi, is Alex there?

JENNIFER

Yes, he is. May I ask who's calling?

ALEX 2

Yeah, um this is Bob...

JENNIFER

All right, hold on. Alex, it's for you.

ALEX 1

Who is it?

JENNIFER

Someone named Bob.

ALEX 1

Bob? Bob who?

JENNIFER

I don't know. He didn't say.

Alex 1 goes to the phone.

ALEX 2

I already know you're going to be pissed, so save it.

Alex 1 jumps at the sound of Alex 2's voice.

ALEX 1

(A little too loudly) Oh, hi Bob...

Jennifer wanders out into the kitchen.

ALEX 1

(Whispering) This had better be important. What if she had recognized your voice?

ALEX 2

Look, would I have called if it wasn't important? I think you had better get over here. I don't think it can wait.

ALEX 1

But I'm here with Jennifer. You're sure it can't wait?

ALEX 2

Yes. That power surge just completely destroyed the main unit.

ALEX 1

(Sighs) All right. I'll be there as soon as I can.

He hangs up the phone.

ALEX 1

Uh, Jen? I have to go.

JENNIFER

Go, but why? What for?

ALEX 1

That power surge has caused some major damage to some equipment I set up for the Navy. I have to go down there and help them figure it all out...

JENNIFER

Can't it wait 'till tomorrow?

ALEX 1

No, you know the Navy. It really can't wait.

JENNIFER

But, how long will it take?

ALEX 1

I'm not sure... I'll call you tomorrow.

JENNIFER

Yeah, all right. I love you.

ALEX 1

I love you, too.

They kiss, and he exits.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex 2 and Alex 1 sit across from one another at the work table with the burnt Main Unit in between them.

ALEX 1

It's pretty bad.

ALEX 2

Yeah... what're we going to do? This puts us a whole day behind.

ALEX 1

Well, there's not a whole lot we can do tonight. I'll tell you what. You pull it apart, see what's salvageable, and tomorrow morning we'll try and put it back together. It might not be as bad as it looks.

ALEX 2

All right. Are you going to go back to Jennifer's?

ALEX 1

Yeah, I'd like to. Do you mind?

ALEX 2

Just be hear early tomorrow. We've got lots of work to do.

ALEX 1

Get some rest, and try not to worry.

ALEX 2

Yeah, see you tomorrow.

Alex 1 leaves Alex 2 behind. Alex 2 shakes his head, looking at the main unit, then grabs a screwdriver and goes to work.

INT. JENNIFER'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Jennifer has turned on the television. She is flipping through channels one by one. Finally she stops and turns off the television. She then turns on the radio and picks up a book. she reads the first page 3 times, then throws the book down.

Jennifer goes to the phone . She dials a number. It rings and Megan answers.

MEGAN

Hello?

JENNIFER

Hi, Megan. It's Jennifer.

MEGAN

Oh, Hi.

JENNIFER

Um, I was just sitting around with nothing to do, so I thought I would call.

MEGAN

You, with nothing to do? That sort of surprises me.

JENNIFER

What do you mean?

MEGAN

Nothing. You've just been so busy and all lately. I haven't heard from you in a while.

JENNIFER

I'm sorry Megan. How are you.

MEGAN

All right. Can't really complain. How are you?

JENNIFER

A little lonesome, actually.

MEGAN

Really? Where's Alex?

JENNIFER

(Frowns) He had to go off and do some work.

MEGAN

So you called me...

JENNIFER

Yeah. Are you doing anything?

MEGAN

Yeah, Jen. I have to be at work in about an hour.

JENNIFER

Oh, well, maybe another time.

MEGAN

Maybe. (Softens a little) What are you doing tomorrow night?

JENNIFER

Well, Alex wanted to go to this new restaurant...

MEGAN

Oh.

JENNIFER

Would you like to come with us?

MEGAN

No. Thank you, but no.

JENNIFER

Well, how about Wednesday?

MEGAN

Work. Sorry.

JENNIFER

Well, another time then?

MEGAN

Yeah.

JENNIFER

I guess I had better let you go...

MEGAN

Yeah, I need to start getting ready for work.

JENNIFER

Yeah. Um, take care, huh Meg?

MEGAN

You, too, Jen.

JENNIFER

Bye.

MEGAN

Bye.

They hang up.

There is a knock at the door and Jennifer rises to answer.

EXT. FRONT PORCH - NIGHT

Alex 2 is standing on the porch, smiling as she answers.

JENNIFER

Alex, you're back!

ALEX 1

(Leaning in for an embrace) Miss me?

JENNIFER

Maybe a little (she kisses him).

They enter.

INT. JENNIFER'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Alex 1 and Jennifer sit together sipping wine, snuggled up on the couch.

ALEX 1

... So, they really didn't need me after all. I do have some bad news, though. I'm going to have to do some work for the next few nights.

JENNIFER

(Really disappointed) Oh.

ALEX 1

Is that all right?

JENNIFER

Yeah, it's fine. I'm sure I can find something to occupy myself right?

ALEX 1

Can you call Megan? Maybe the two of you could go and do something.

JENNIFER

I might, I'll see.

Alex 2 pulls her to him, hugging her close.

INT. RESTAURANT - MONTAGE

A montage of Jennifer and Megan goes by. The earlier images show the two of them stiff and formal, neither of them smiling. Gradually their mood changes. By the end of the montage, they are laughing and having fun.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - MONTAGE

The montage continues with Alex 2 and Alex 1 working together in the shop. The machine comes together, piece by piece. These shots are intercut with shots of Jennifer and Megan spending more time together, at lunch in the Hospital, and in a bar after work.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

The machine is finished. The calendar reads November 26.

ALEX 1

I'm bushed. I guess we're about ready to run the final tests, though.

ALEX 2

We've got plenty of time. I think we ought to just relax for the rest of the evening.

ALEX 1

Yeah, I think you're right. We should probably check up on Jennifer, too.

ALEX 2

Here, I'll call her.

Alex 2 picks up the phone and dials Jennifer's number.

JENNIFER

Hello?

ALEX 2

Hi, Jen! Just calling to see how you're doing.

JENNIFER

Things are fine, here. How's work?

ALEX 2

Almost finished up after tonight.

JENNIFER

Great. Does that mean you'll be free tomorrow?

ALEX 2

Yeah, tomorrow should be fine.

JENNIFER

Great, you can take me to that restaurant you canceled on the other day.

ALEX 2

All right. It's a date. Pick you up at 3:00?

JENNIFER

So early?

ALEX 2

Well, we can have a drink first, and still be done in time to catch a movie.

JENNIFER

All right. Sounds good. But how about if I pick you up instead.

ALEX 2

Uhm (looks at Alex 1, shrugs) all right, I guess that'll be O.K. See you here at 3:00. By hon.

Alex 2 hangs up.

INT. WORKSHOP - DAY

The calendar says November 25. The Alexes are making final preparations. The clock reads 2:05.

ALEX 1

You'd better get ready. It's almost time.

ALEX 2

Yeah. Set up the timing sequence and I'll start the pump up.

The clock reads 2:08PM, and the procedure works out just as it has before, with the pump and Main Unit warming up for a few moments while the Alex 1 loads the information from the disk.

At 2:10PM the two are completely ready. The move the machine down the ramp into the open area and Alex sits in the Command chair.

ALEX 1

Don't forget what you have to say to them... us... whatever. Just say not to go out on the 23rd.

ALEX 2

Got it?

ALEX 1

Ready?

ALEX 2

Ready.

The clock ticks off to exactly 2:14PM.

ALEX 1

Go!

Alex 2 presses the "Go" button and the machine vibrates and begins to fade from view. It does not quite go out of sight, however, and fades back in, making a terrible sound. It fades out and back in once again.

ALEX 1

Oh no! Alex!! Get out of there!!

Alex 1 reaches into the machine after it fades in and grabs Alex 2, pulling him out of the machine. Just as they land, a bright light and loud crash come from the machine.

ALEX 2

What happened?

ALEX 1

I don't know. The Main Unit must still be screwed up! Look, it's burnt out.

They look at the Main Unit, which is charred and has smoke rising from it. An alarm suddenly sounds from the Digital Clock. It says 2:15PM.

ALEX 1

Quick, the other Alex is about to appear! We've got to move the machine!

They begin to push the machine back up the ramp. The machine begins to glow and a loud concussion knocks both Alexes back to the ground.

When they look up they see Alex 3 sitting in what was both machines, now fused together. The Main Units of both machines are joined together in a melted mess. Alex 3 is unhurt. All three Alexes stand, stare at each other, and stare at the machine.

ALL

Oh, No!

INT. ALEX'S KITCHEN - AFTERNOON

ALEX 3

Some of the equipment is salvageable, but not much. I guess we'll have to rebuild the rest from scratch.

ALEX 2

We can't rebuild them from scratch. There's no more money left.

ALEX 3

What do you mean there's no more money?

ALEX 2

With two of us screwing around, instead of just one, we drained a lot of the funds. Then the power surge just about entirely destroyed the Main Unit the day after you left. We used what money we had to fix it.

ALEX 1

Well, what are we going to do?

ALEX 3

Look, I'd like to change my clothes and get comfortable, and then the three of us will sit down and figure this out...

ALEX 2

While you're upstairs, we'll see exactly what we can salvage.

Alex 2 and Alex 1 start shutting down the machine while Alex 3 runs upstairs.

EXT. FRONT PORCH - DAY

Jennifer steps up to the front porch and rings the doorbell.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

Alex 1 has just pulled the casing off of the Main Unit as the doorbell rings.

ALEX 2

Oh, I almost forgot. Jennifer. I'll go answer the door.

ALEX 1

Thanks!

Alex 2 puts his tools down and trots off to the door.

EXT. FRONT PORCH - DAY

Alex 2 opens the door.

ALEX 2

Hiya Jen!. Come in.

JENNIFER

Hi, Alex.

Jennifer kisses him briefly and enters.

INT. FOYER - DAY

ALEX 2

You're early! I'm not ready yet.

JENNIFER

That's O.K. You go up and change and I'll wait here.

ALEX 2

O.K. I'll be right back.

Alex 2 runs upstairs and Jennifer sits down in a nearby chair.

INT. UPSTAIRS HALL - DAY

Alex 2 walks into the bedroom just as Alex 3 walks out of the bathroom. He is dressed in comfortable but stylish clothes.

INT. BEDROOM - DAY

Alex 2 walks into the bedroom.

ALEX 2

(Whispering) Alex...I forgot to tell you that Jennifer was coming over... Alex?

Alex 2 looks around the room, looks into the other bathroom entrance, even look into the closet. Finally he rushes out to the hall.

INT. UPSTAIRS HALL - DAY

From the hall, Alex 2 can see Alex 3 who has just reached the bottom of the stairs. Alex 3 stops dead as he sees Jennifer. Alex 2 smacks his forehead with the palm of his hand in frustration.

INT. FOYER - DAY

Alex 3 looks at Jennifer, turns to try and find somewhere to run to, realizes it's too late and freezes.

JENNIFER

Well, that was certainly quick!

ALEX 3

(Nervously) Uhm...Well... you know...

JENNIFER

Well, if you're ready, lets go... I could really use a drink.

Jennifer gets up and takes Alex 3's arm. Alex 3 looks over his shoulder at Alex 2 up the stairs, and shrugs his shoulders.

Alex 3 and Jennifer exit.

INT. WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex 2 and Alex 1 are sitting at the table as Alex 3 enters.

ALEX 3

God, I never thought I'd be this glad to finish a date with Jennifer. I really thought I was done for!

ALEX 2

How'd it go?

ALEX 3

I think she thinks I'm an idiot. Things are so different than when I left, and I didn't know what she was talking about half the time. I muddled through, though... I made a date for dinner with her tomorrow night...

ALEX 1

Good. Have a seat and get comfortable and we'll fill you in on things.

Alex 3 sits down at the table and opens a can of Pepsi from a six pack sitting next to the Main Unit.

ALEX 3

So, how bad is it?

ALEX 1

The worst. There's almost nothing salvageable in either Unit.

ALEX 3

Have you two given any thought to where we can get the money?

ALEX 2

That's just what we were talking about when you came in. There's only one thing we have that's worth that much...

ALEX 3

No, you can't be seriously thinking... You want to sell the boat?

ALEX 2

I can't see what choice we have. It's the only way we're going to get the money.

ALEX 1

He's right, Alex. If we don't get the money fast, then we're done for. It's the only option.

ALEX 3

But to sell the boat?

ALEX 2

What else can we do?

ALEX 3

Sell the car, blood, the record collection, anything...

ALEX 1

If we were to sell everything we had with the exception of the boat, we'd still come up short. It's the only way, Alex.

ALEX 3

All right. I guess you're right...

ALEX 2

Look, I'll go out tomorrow morning and sell the boat. The two of you can go over the data to see what went wrong, and when I get back, hopefully I'll have enough money and parts to get us going. We've only got a week left to get this all done.

ALEX 3

If you take anything less than thirty thousand for that boat, you're getting ripped off.

ALEX 2

Don't worry, I won't come back with a handful of beans. Everything's going to work out.

ALEX 1

So, why don't we try and get some rest?

They all get up and move out of the workshop.

INT. ALEX'S KITCHEN - EVENING

Alex 3 is standing over the stove, stirring a pot of spaghetti sauce. Alex 1 is standing at the kitchen table, cinching up his tie. He is dressed for dinner. Alex 2 enters.

ALEX 2

Wow, that smells great. I'm starved.

ALEX 3

I thought you would be. You and I get to eat this wonderful home cooked meal while Alex over there has to go out again.

ALEX 2

Were you two able to put anything together form the salvaged parts?

ALEX 1

Alex'll have to fill you in, I've got to run or I'll be late. Did you sell the boat.

ALEX 2

Yeah, I sold it. He gave me eleven thousand. Not what the boat is worth, but enough to get us by.

ALEX 3

Damn. I wish we didn't have to do that.

ALEX 1

Me, too... Well, I'll see you two tomorrow morning.

ALEX 2

Be here early. We've got a lot of work to do.

Alex 1 nods and exits.

Alex 2 turns to Alex 3.

ALEX 2

So, what did you to figure out?

ALEX 3

Grab some plates and we'll talk while we eat.

Alex 2 grabs the plates and Alex 3 dishes up the spaghetti as they speak. They continue to speak as the two of them sit down to eat, talking in between bites of food.

EXT. JENNIFER'S FRONT PORCH - NIGHT

Darkness has just fallen. Alex 1 sits on the porch steps. He has a dozen roses in his hands. They look slightly wilted. Jennifer finally pulls up in her car. Alex 1 goes to her as she gets out.

ALEX 1

Jennifer, where have you been? We were supposed to meet forty minutes ago!

JENNIFER

Oh, Alex. I'm sorry. I was out with Megan and we lost track of time.

ALEX 1

Oh, well, come on. Our dinner reservations will be given away if we don't hurry. I'll call and see if they'll delay them while you wash up.

JENNIFER

come on, Alex. Lighten up. Aren't you glad to see me?

ALEX 1

I'm sorry, Jennifer. Yes, of course I'm glad to see you. I just got worried, that's all.

Alex 2 embraces her, but it is stiff, as Jennifer appears annoyed. A look of worry and doubt crosses her face.

JENNIFER

Let's go inside and I'll get ready.

They enter.

INT. WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex 2 is working on the pump, the new components of which are lying on a towel. Alex 3 is at the computer, typing away at the new program, and writing notes on a yellow writing pad.

The door upstairs slams, and Alex 1 stomps downstairs to the workshop, muttering angrily to himself.

ALEX 2

What happened?

ALEX 1

Awful, it was entirely awful.

ALEX 3

What was awful? What's wrong?

ALEX 1

We argued the entire evening. We argued about what we were going to eat, we argued about art, we argued about whether or not we should take her car or walk.

ALEX 2

Is there any damage done? Did you say anything we'll regret?

ALEX 1

No...

ALEX 3

Did she?

ALEX 1

No, nothing like that. It was all so stupid. It's all stuff we've talked about before, but never arguing like this.

ALEX 2

Hm. Well, so much for the bad news. We've got some good news that might cheer you up.

ALEX 1

What?

ALEX 2

The pumps won't take quite as long as we thought. I think we'll ahead of schedule.

ALEX 3

Which is good, because if we can, we probably ought to do things early. I don't want to cut this one as close as the last one.

ALEX 1

Well, I'm going to go upstairs and change, and then I'll come back down and you two can show me where we are.

ALEX 2

Good. Did you make plans with Jennifer tomorrow? Maybe I can smooth things over with her.

ALEX 1

She's made plans to see Megan already. Megan's picking her up at work.

Alex 2 turns and goes upstairs.

INT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT

Megan and Jennifer are sitting together eating. They seem to be happy and enjoying themselves.

MEGAN

So then, after staring at me all night, he came over and tried to pick me up by showing me a card trick.

JENNIFER

Oh, no... So what did you do?

MEGAN

So... I took him home and showed him a few tricks of my own.

JENNIFER

(Laughing) Megan, you're terrible!

MEGAN

Well, he is cute, smart, funny. He's everything I could ask for.

JENNIFER

So...

MEGAN

So, I'm seeing him again tomorrow.

JENNIFER

Megan, that's great! I'm glad for you!

MEGAN

I was pretty pleased myself.

JENNIFER

Megan, I... I wanted to apologize for neglecting you so badly when I did...

MEGAN

Jennifer, it's all over and done with. Water under the bridge.

JENNIFER

But I was so awful to you...

MEGAN

Look, Jennifer (she reaches out and takes Jennifer's hand), we're grown women. I rather angry, but I got over it. We have different lives. There will be times when we separate for a while. That's part of what friendship is all about. Besides, that boy's really in love with you, and how can I resent that?

JENNIFER

Alex? Yeah, I know... and I'm a little worried...

MEGAN

You're not having second thoughts, are you?

JENNIFER

No, not really... I don't know. I just feel uncomfortable around him lately... I don't know what it is. For a while there I couldn't stand to be without him for even a minute. Now... It feels like he's a little too close, you know?

MEGAN

I think so.

JENNIFER

I just don't know if it's a passing phase or something permanent.

MEGAN

Jennifer, just listen to your heart. I know that sounds hokey, but it works. If your heart tells you you need something, trust it. Just do what it takes to make you happy.

JENNIFER

I just wish I knew what that was...

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

The Alexes are hard at work, Alex 2 on one pump, Alex 3 on the two Main Units, and Alex 1 is mixing the coolant foam.

The phone rings and Alex 1 picks it up to answer it.

ALEX 1

Hello?... Oh, hi Jennifer.

JENNIFER

Hi, Alex. How are things?

ALEX 1

Oh, fine. Working, missing you, that sort of thing...

ALEX 2

(Not loud enough to be overheard by Jennifer) Don't overdo it Alex.

JENNIFER

It's only been a day since I spoke to you, Alex...

ALEX 1

(Surprised by her reaction) Yeah, well...

JENNIFER

So... What are you working on...

ALEX 1

Oh, nothing much, just a toy I've been tinkering with...

JENNIFER

Oh... (pause).

ALEX 1

Is something wrong, Jennifer?

The other two Alexes stop working and listen more attentively.

JENNIFER

No, nothings wrong, why do you ask?

ALEX 1

You just sounded like something might be. Not still sore about the other night?

JENNIFER

No, Alex. I said nothing was wrong.

ALEX 1

Alright. Just making sure. Are you doing anything tonight?

JENNIFER

No. Would you like to do something?

ALEX 1

I thought you'd never ask. Shall I come get you around 8:00?

JENNIFER

Sure. What are we going to do?

ALEX 1

A movie or something. I'll figure something out before I get there...

JENNIFER

O.K. Alex. I've got to go.

ALEX 1

All right. See you at eight?

JENNIFER

Eight O'clock... Bye.

ALEX 1

Bye, hon.

Alex 1 hangs up the phone.

ALEX 1

(To Alex 2) You have to pick her up at 8:00.

ALEX 2

What's wrong?

ALEX 1

I think she is still irritated over last night. Tonight may be the night to really show her a good time. We've got enough money now. Why don't you spend a little on her tonight.

ALEX 2

I think you're right. I'll call and make reservations someplace expensive.

MONTAGE

Scenes of that night. We see Jennifer and Alex 2 eating, dancing, walking in the moonlight. At one point, Jennifer's smile turns into a frown. She replaces the smile when Alex 2 looks at her again.

EXT. JENNIFER'S FRONT PORCH - NIGHT

As they kiss good-bye, Jennifer grabs Alex 2 and pulls him inside.

JENNIFER

Oh, please, make love to me, Alex.

She is trembling as she says this. A small tear forms at the corner of her eye. Alex 2 kisses it away, lifts her up, and takes her to her room.

INT. BEDROOM - MORNING

Jennifer is awake. It is very early morning. She looks over at Alex 2 and frowns. Alex 2 rolls over in his sleep and puts his arm around her. She makes slow moves to get up without waking him. She begins dressing. In spite of her efforts, Alex 2 wakes up.

ALEX 2

Hmm. Morning (he stretches).

JENNIFER

Morning, Alex.

ALEX 2

Hmm, Not so fast, you...

Alex 2 playfully grabs her and pulls her back into bed.

ALEX 2

What made you think you could escape so easily, huh? Without even a good morning kiss?

JENNIFER

I was just trying not to wake you, Alex...

ALEX 2

Of course you should wake me (he kisses her cheek).

JENNIFER

I really have to go, Alex.

ALEX 2

Can't you just stay and play a little longer?

He kisses her again, more passionately. She pushes him away.

JENNIFER

No, Alex. I said I have to go.

ALEX 2

I'm sorry, Jennifer. I was just playing.

JENNIFER

I know, but sometimes your playing can get annoying...

ALEX 2

Sorry. I didn't mean to.

JENNIFER

Oh, I'm sorry Alex. You know what an ogre I can be in the morning.

ALEX 2

It's all right. Don't worry about it. You got to work and maybe I can see you tonight.

JENNIFER

Yeah, call me. Lock up when you leave?

ALEX 2

Sure.

Jennifer kisses him before she goes.

MONTAGE

Scenes of the three Alexes slowly fitting the machine together, buying parts at the store, receiving packages in the mail, and putting them all together and interspersed with scenes of Jennifer and Megan together, or Jennifer alone. We almost never see an Alex 2 and Jennifer together, and when we do, they are either fighting or quiet. Later, Jennifer sits near her phone which rings until the answering machine picks it up. When she hears it is Alex 2, she does not pick up the phone.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - DAY

The calendar reads November 29. The clock reads 3:45 PM. All three Alexes are completing final tests on both machines. One machine is in the open space while the other sits on the storage ramp. After a moment, all three Alexes step back and look at their work.

ALEX 2

We did it! It's all done!

ALEX 1

Just in time, too.

ALEX 2

Oh, I don't know. We've got ten hours left.

ALEX 3

Oh, great. Ten hours.

ALEX 2

Well, we have cut it closer, you know.

ALEX 3

I'd rather not be reminded, thank you.

ALEX 1

It's too bad Jennifer can't be here to share this with all three of us.

ALEX 3

Yeah. I think we should celebrate. I'll get the champagne, you two order us a pizza and put on some tunes.

ALEX 2

Yeah! Great!

INT. JENNIFER'S OFFICE - NIGHT

Jennifer sits in her office as the last few people are heading home. She is holding a memo in her hand. The phone rings as she drops the letter on the desk. As the phone conversation begins we can see that the letter is notifying her that the Jenson has been given to someone else.

JENNIFER

Hi, this is Jennifer...

ALEX 2

Hi, hon. How’s work going.

JENNIFER

Oh, (sigh) all right, I guess. How are you?

ALEX 2

Great. A little tipsy. I've been celebrating a little. Are you still up for something tonight?

JENNIFER

Um, I don't think so, Alex. I think I'd like to be alone tonight.

ALEX 2

Why, what's the matter?

JENNIFER

Does something have to be wrong for me to want to stay home alone? Look, if it was important, I would tell you.

ALEX 2

You promise?

JENNIFER

Yes, Alex. I just want to be alone for a while, that's all.

ALEX 2

All right. Um, will you call me if you need anything?

JENNIFER

Alex... Yes, Alex, Bye.

ALEX 2

Bye.

Alex 2 pauses, and then looks up at Alex 1 and Alex 3.

ALEX 2

Something's wrong, I can feel it.

ALEX 1

How do you mean?

ALEX 2

She just sounded really down. I'm going to go over and make sure everything's all right.

ALEX 3

Hey, you better take a cab. The champagne, you know...

ALEX 2

Good idea.

Alex picks up the phone again.

EXT. JENNIFER'S FRONT PORCH - NIGHT

Jennifer drives up and sees Alex 2 sitting on the porch, waiting.

JENNIFER

Hi, what are you doing here?

ALEX 2

I was worried. I just wanted to make sure you were all right.

JENNIFER

Well, I'm fine, Alex. I suppose I have to let you in.

ALEX 2

Well, no, you don't have to.

JENNIFER

What am I supposed to do, send you away? It wouldn't be hospitable.

ALEX 2

Just let me phone a cab, and I'll go, I just came to make sure there wasn't anything I could do for you.

JENNIFER

Like what, Alex?

ALEX 2

I don't know...

JENNIFER

Alex, you shouldn't have come. I want to be alone tonight.

Jennifer walks inside, Alex 2 follows her.

INT. JENNIFER'S KITCHEN - NIGHT

ALEX 2

All right. I'll go as soon as I get a cab. But I wish you'd tell me what's wrong.

JENNIFER

Nothing is wrong...

ALEX 2

Then why are you so upset?

JENNIFER

Look, Alex. I don't want to talk about it!

ALEX 2

Is it me, I mean, did I don something wrong?

JENNIFER

No. I would tell you if it was you, now will you just call your cab?

ALEX 2

All right, as long as it isn't me...

JENNIFER

That's all you really care about, isn't it?

ALEX 2

Of course not. It's just, if it's about me, I should know. If it isn't then I really can't do anything to help unless you let me...

JENNIFER

Just call your cab, Alex, and back off a little. I have to go to the bathroom.

Alex 2 grabs the phone and dials the cab and Jennifer sets her bag down and goes into the bathroom. She sets the bag on the edge of the table, and after she leaves, it falls and spills on the floor. Alex 2 bends down to pick the stuff up when he notices the memo. He reads the first few lines and realizes what it's about. After he reads it, he sets it on the table.

Jennifer enters.

ALEX 2

Jennifer, I'm really sorry.

JENNIFER

Sorry for what, Alex?

ALEX 2

Your bag fell, and the memo fell out (he points to it). Jen, you deserve that account... I'm sorry.

JENNIFER

Get out, Alex...

ALEX 2

Huh?

JENNIFER

Get out, Alex, before I ... (pauses, gains control) Just get out.

ALEX 2

I want to help, Jennifer...

JENNIFER

You could have helped by staying out of it Alex. I just wanted one night on my own to deal with this myself. But you couldn't leave things be. You didn't have enough respect for my wishes to leave me alone for one night. Just leave before you make things worse.

Alex 2 starts to say something and stops. He nods, and walks out just as the cab arrives.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex 2 and Alex 3 are sitting at the table. Alex 1 enters. The clock reads 9:08PM.

ALEX 1

She's not answering her phone.

ALEX 2

I don't understand how I cold be so dumb.

ALEX 3

It's all right, Alex. Quit beating yourself up over it. She's not going to hate us forever. We'll just back off a little for a while.

ALEX 1

Well, this is our last night together, guys. It's been an experience, hasn't it?

ALEX 3

I'll say it has. You know, I'm going to miss you two.

ALEX 1

Oh, knock it off, both of you. You both know it'll be better when we straighten this all out.

ALEX 2

Yeah, you're right.

ALEX 1

But, I'm going to miss you guys, too.

ALEX 3

Well, lets go rest for a couple of hours. We'll get up at 11:30 and go to it. Departure time is 1:05AM. This is one plane we can't miss.

ALEX 2

All right. Lets go.

The three of them wander off to sleep.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Alex 2 and Alex 3 are asleep. Alex 2 wakes up and groggily looks at the clock. It says 12:30. Alex 2 panics.

ALEX 2

AAAA! Alex, wake up! We've overslept!

Alex 2 shakes Alex 1 until he wakes up. When Alex 1 sees the clock, his eyes get really wide, and he jumps out of bed.

ALEX 3

Come on, we don't have much time!

Alex 2 taps the alarm clock with one finger, and it goes off. It is a loud annoying buzz, and he tries to turn it off.

ALEX 3

Leave it!

He grabs Alex 2's hand and pulls him out of the room.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Alex 3 pokes his head around the corner. Alex 1 is asleep on the couch.

ALEX 3

Alex, Wake up. We're late.

Alex 1 wakes up and looks at Alex 3.

ALEX 3

It's 12:30. We don't have any time to loose. Come on!

ALEX 1

Oh, no! All right, I'm coming.

They all exit.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

The three Alexes are rushing around each checking and turning on different pieces of equipment, and calling out to the other two that that particular thing has been checked.

ALEX 2

The pump checks out.

ALEX 1

Main Unit number one is set.

ALEX 3

Main Unit number two is warming up.

The Alexes are in such a hurry that a few times they bump into each other, but for the most part they are fairly organized.

ALEX 3

All right, it looks like everything checks out. It's 12:58, we've got to go. Alex, you get strapped in there, and you, Alex, get strapped in there.

Alex 2 and Alex 1 strap into the two machines.

ALEX 2

Looks like this is it.

ALEX 3

Start up your machines...

Alex 2 and Alex 1 start warming the machines up. The "Standby" message on the two screens simultaneously move changes to "GO".

ALEX 3

When you guys are ready, throw your switches.

They are just about to throw the switches when Alex 2 shouts out.

ALEX 2

Wait! Hold on. (Alex 2 gets up) I just had an idea! We can save the boat! (Grabs a newspaper and hands it to Alex 1) That paper is from last week and has the lottery results in it. Win the lottery and we save the boat!

ALEX 1

Got it. I won't let you down!

ALEX 3

Guys, hurry up! It's 1:03. Go already!

Alex 2 gets back into his seat. They press the "GO" buttons, and the machines begin to vibrate. Alex 2's machine fades from view first, and then Alex 1's.

Alex 3 is left standing there alone.

The doorbell rings and there is a very loud knock on the door. In a daze, Alex 3 moves to answer it.

EXT. FRONT PORCH - NIGHT

Jennifer is standing at the door. Alex 3 answers.

ALEX 3

Jennifer, hi! What are you doing here so late?

JENNIFER

Um, I couldn't sleep.

ALEX 3

Well come in, it's cold outside.

They enter.

INT. ALEX'S FOYER - NIGHT

Alex 2 closes the door and helps Jennifer with her coat.

JENNIFER

I really shouldn't stay long... There are some things I need to say, and I need to say them right away before I loose my nerve.

ALEX 3

Why, what's wrong (the smile fades from Alex 3's lips).

JENNIFER

Come on, let's sit down first.

They go into the living room.

INT. ALEX'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

They both sit down. Jennifer looks at Alex 2, looks away, and stands up again. She paces, arms crossed, as she speaks.

JENNIFER

I keep telling myself that what I am doing is stupid, but it really isn't. I've been doing a lot of thinking the last two weeks, Alex, and I've realized that I've lost a sense of space for myself. You've been so wonderful, so good to me, but I just don't feel like I have any room to breathe. I need that room right now, Alex. I need time to be alone. I need time to figure out what I want.

ALEX 3

I don't understand.

JENNIFER

Alex, I love you. I love you very much, but I realized that I depended on you for too much, and when you couldn't be there, I didn't know what to do. I need some time away. I don't know if it's a permanent thing or only for a while. All I know is I have to break it off. I can't live like this. I'm sorry. I need to be able to support myself, and I can't with you there. Don't wait for me to figure things out, just live your life...I'm sorry Alex.

Alex 3 stands and she runs up to him, kissing his cheek.

JENNIFER

I'm sorry... I love you...

Jennifer runs outside. Alex 3 stands there in shock, then runs after her.

ALEX 3

Jennifer, wait! Wait!

EXT. ALEX'S HOUSE - NIGHT

Jennifer, already in her car, drives off in tears. Alex 3 tries to flag her down, but it's no use. She goes out of sight around a corner.

Alex 3 slowly turns and walks back in.

INT. ALEX'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT

Alex 3 walks into the workshop, and leans against the door. He wipes his eyes, and looks across the room at the photo of he and Jennifer, sitting on the desk. The clock on the desk reads 1:41 AM.

The room begins to vibrate, and between Alex 3 and the desk, the machine materializes, empty.

Alex 3 stares at the machine.

FADE OUT
